In order to know why Raila won in this debate with astounding lead, it's important to explore his behind scenes debate prep operation. He didn't just sit down like Uhuru, did, he worked on it. He knows that the business of steering this nation forward, and articulating his vision for the Kenyan people is serious business- no wonder he stood shoulders above the rest during the debate.

Though highly guarded secret, with the debates over, it's now declassified information that Raila's debate prep was probably one of the most sophisticated political sausage making process in Kenya's election history. It was like a multicenter manufacturing process operation with different components made in different locations around the world but was assembled at the CORD HQ auditorium.

Raila, as an avid debater in his own right, a man whose best speeches are when he isn't reading, didn't have to do a lot of preparations. However like most humble leaders, he is not a Mr. Know it All and is receptive to advice.

Due to his busy schedule, he didn't take a lot of time on the preparations. The little time he took on it, was spent smartly, and involved mock debates with his running mate and awesome debater Kalonzo and a mix of 5 other Kenyan-born internationally exposed experts in Business, Law, Academia, Education and Security. A panel of some of the best Kenyan media consultants floated the questions in a US styled debate fashion.

They in a Shakespearean drama style wore masks of the various players that they represented and who would be in the debate as panelists or debaters (Like awesome French based Kenyan actress Colleta Mriju wore the Julie Gichuru mask, and imitated her, it was Hillarious). Muite and Duba were not imitated because their entry was at the last minute, occasioned by an 11 am court order.

The idea was to make it as real as possible so that Raila was psychologically ready for the big game. So the debate prep venue was much a replica of how it was at The Brookehouse International School Auditorium . A Shakespearean dramatic simulation of the potential debate scenarios. And this worked because Raila was on that stage as though he knows it.

As you can see, it required consulting experts in body language, psychology, drama, communications, political science and multiple other fields, locally and internationally were consulted.

Raila benchmarked himself against the best in the world, prepared to debate even Obama if that was his opponent. All I's dotted and Ts crossed.

The fund of questions came from current affairs and was gathered, NOT in real time, from citizens from across the country, via facebook, tweeter and SMS, to include the element of randomness. Questions from various categories were generated randomly, and were directed to the mock debaters, within the rules of the presidential debate.

The choice of Raila's debate prep team was informed by the need to have individuals well versed with intra-Kenyan political issues, and also literate in not only the mechanics of debate preparations and coaching, but also global affairs. He caught Uhuru and the other poorly prepared candidates' off-guard.
This was definitely Raila's game and the next polls will reflect that.

Some of the members of Raila's debate prep team have been involved in debate preps for leaders who are presently making an impact on the global stage. Persons who every candidate they have put their hands on has not only prevailed in debates and elections, but have also gone ahead and made an impact on the world stage. Their students have prospered politically.

Of course the US 2008 Democratic PRIMARY and the 2012 Republican PRIMARY were the case models around which Raila's debate prep simulation was fashioned. This is because of the huge number of candidates involved in the Kenyan election. Primaries tend to have more candidates.

Romney- Obama or Obama-Mc Cain wouldn't have been good simulation clips to use because they only involved 2 candidates as opposed to the Kenyan ones with a crowd of 6!

Thanks to globalization, The CORD leader has been able to live his most favorite 2 words- Technological Sophistication during the debate prep- being able to assemble the best team spread across the world, and interactively engage them using modern information based technologies like Google Hang-outs and Video Teleconferencing.

When I say multi-center, I mean that his debate prep team has members spread across the 7 seas, best brains, in India, Australia, US, UK, South Africa and so on but with whom he had video real time interaction displayed in HD-3D 100 inch screens.

Raila took no chances. Here's how:-

He and his debate prep team did a mock debate under the watch of the advisory team spread across the world via Google Hang-outs and sometimes video teleconferencing. The High Definition 3D 100 inch touch screens make the interaction look as real as possible.

After a debate over a particular issue, like say land, the advisory panel gives their inputs, which includes issues like body language, choice of words and content. They analyze all these in video footages projected in the 3D and HD touch screens, after which they critic and adjust appropriately.

Members of Raila's ivy League and Oxford Trained debate advisory team, who have coached big names in the world arena like UK's David Cameron, Nigeria's Goodluck, India's Manmohan Singh, Zambia's Michael Sata, and America's Bill Clinton, were unanimous that Raila was the most versatile, adaptive and flexible candidate in Africa, South America and Asia that they have ever worked with during such preparations. And his superior debating skills were evident in the debate.

Raila's game has truly laid new standards on debate preparation science. Thanks to his desire to explore new ways of doing this, he has like he made the Hummer the household brand, just changed the way debating and its preparation is done in our great country Kenya.

Mh!kwa hiyo wewe ndiyo umejigeuza judge?acha ujuaji!

Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta were on the defensive throughout they cant even come close. The shining beacon in the debate was Ole Kiyapi with Dida coming close second for his humorous antics.

mh hii hata mi sikubaliani nayo and I was surprised to see ur headin kua Odinga wins! lbd hiyo poll imefanywa na fans wake ila sincerely haKua kihivo

tatizo la wakenya mnapenda ukabia mnoo kuongea sio kigezo ila on how some one is able in doing strategic decision 4rm tz

Can you convey directly what you mean, uliposikia martha karua kwenye debate alisema ukabila ndio jambo linalowapiga njaa wakenya, kila mtu na maulana wake na nguvu zake. kusema tu ukabila ukabila haibadilishi chochote katika mafikira ya wavivu. nimekuwa katika safari nyingi na husikia tu swala la ukabila kama kijisababu likiendelezwa katika miji mikuu sana sana na wavivu

kwa maono yangu naona martha Karua was a great debator, hasa kwa kuzungumzia kwa kuonesha akisemacho ndicho amanishacho, nampa namba1,pili nakuja kwa Raila, tatu nakuja kwa Peter Keneth na mwisho kwa Uhuru mudavad...ila Dida was like a comedian in there, alafu kulukuwa na iron man pale ndani hakutaka sikia chochote sura ngumu macho katoa, wakenya mkimpa yule vita zitaibuka na majirani.

In Summary

  • 34 per cent said they had changed their choice of presidential candidate after watching Monday night's televised event

Narc Kenya boss Martha Karua, assistant minister Peter Kenneth, deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Prime Minister Raila Odinga were the best performers in the Monday presidential debate, according to a new poll.

Consumer Insight, in telephone interviews of 328 TV viewers conducted immediately after the debate, also ranked the candidates on how they performed in specific issues.

Many of those who watched the debate said it was very useful with a full 92 per cent saying it helped them understand the candidates better.

The big surprise was the large number of respondents whom the research firm said had changed their choices after the debate.

"Indeed 34 per cent of TV viewers said that the debate had influenced them to change their choice of presidential candidate," said Mr Ndirangu Maina, the managing director of Consumer Insight.

The surprise of the night was Mr Kenneth whose grasp of issues and facts appear to have impressed a lot of those interviewed.

Ranked top

While overall the polling firm's research said Mr Kenyatta was ranked top by those interviewed, Mr Odinga performed strongly too, being ranked best in seven of the 18 issues discussed.

Prof James Ole Kiyiapi impressed on one issue, education, on which he was ranked the strongest debater.

Mr Odinga did better than the other candidates on devolution, public service reform, energy, national security, foreign policy, infrastructure and implementation of the Constitution.

Ms Karua was seen as the best candidate to deal with corruption, health care, social protection, water and environment.

In a surprisingly strong performance, the polling firm said its research showed Mr Kenneth perceived as the candidate best able to bring economic growth, fight against tribalism and manage resources.

Mr Kenyatta was rated strongest on food security and job creation.

Mr Mohammed Abduba Diba, Mr Musalia Mudavadi and Mr Paul Muite did not quite shine in any of the 18 issues, according to the research firm.

Overall, Consumer Insight said 27 per cent of the people it interviewed ranked Mr Kenyatta as the best performer, followed by 26 per cent who thought Mr Kenneth did best while 22 per cent ranked Mr Odinga first and 12 per cent gave Ms Karua top marks.

Mr Dida was ranked best performer by nine per cent of the respondents, Mr Muite two per cent while Mr Mudavadi and Kiyiapi were rated top by only one per cent of those interviewed.

The polling firm said it interviewed the 328 TV viewers immediately after the debate between 11pm and 1am and from 6am and 8.30am.

Mr Maina said all respondents confirmed having watched the debate and all claimed to be registered voters.

"This sample was drawn from a database with over 50,000 people representing all demographics in Kenya," he said.

Mr Maina said the data was collected through Computer Aided Telephone Interviews (CATI), a technique that randomizes respondent selection and facilitates efficient data capture.

He said nearly six out of 10 TV viewers said Mr Kenyatta was right in contesting the presidency, despite facing crimes against humanity charges at the Hague.

Political scientist and researcher, Mr Tom Wolf, giving a personal analysis, said he thought all the presidential candidates performed well.
