Seriously, why???
Someone might say but I don't even bother thinking about that, I am still celebrating the win of Italy against England, I cashed in big on Xbet. Whoop whoop! Well good for you but read on, this article might help you!
One fact is true, whether as a professional or entrepreneur, if your motive is to make progress in whatever you are doing the call to leadership is something you cannot avoid.
Let's take a case scenario of Juma "mchapa kazi"; the good accountant. His a guy who knows the math, he has the companies accounting system at the back of his hand. Any anomalies in the company's finance records, He is the guy to go to. His name pops up in the managerial meetings when they are reviewing the books because his Manager boasts that the reason the company is doing so well is because of Juma "mchapa kazi".
Fastword a year and half later, Juma recieves an email with an attachment of an offer letter form HR for the managerial position his manager resigned from two weeks ago. Juma is so excited and even calls his Pastor eager to share the testimony of receiving a job he is not even qualified for. As exciting as all that sounds, what Juma doesn't know is that this new apppointnent has come with a demand for more results.
He may be very surprised to find out that he will no longer be working as much with systems or numbers because the higher you go the more you work through people. I can imagine the shock of having his team "not balancing" like his books; finding it difficult to have everyone do their work because he was used to working with numbers not people. In frustration he decides to do most of the work by himself and this stresses him out, the result is that his department is being ineffective. It's not a mystery what the end result will be if Juma "mchapa kazi" doesn't step up to the need of developing leadership skills.
This type of leadership, we call it "leadership by accident". It's unexpected on Juma's part because he didn't know; he had no control over the plan of his previous manager leaving. He was just minding his business being brilliant!
Juma ! Juma! Juma! Brilliance will cause you to find yourself in leadership, question is ' Why weren't you preparing?'. I ask you the same today; 'Why aren't you preparing?'.
Then there's Mwanaidi, a 'sister-du' ( I really tired to find an english word but I couldn't), she is good at baking. Every other day, there's an order for a cake, cup cakes or just those nice pretty cookies she makes that give your taste buds all sorts of good feelings. Her customers are always so happy with her baking such that her number is now in almost 200 phone books and they keep sharing her contact after bragging about her work on social media.
Our 'sister-du' is overwhelmed! Too many orders, she decides to get help, after advertising for it, she finally employs Amina and Zawadi. Amina is a promising baker despite being poor at time management and Zawadi was previously fired from her last place of work because of continously being caught using her work time for her personal errands. 1 months into having them on her team, Mwanaidi gets a call from a client complaining that her son's cake hasn't been delivered yet even after paying in full. The party has been on for two hours and there is a no show for the cake.
Mwanaidi who had left Amina and Zawadi working on this order 3 hours ago to attend to other deliveres and a meetings with cooperate client worth a big deal. She is now panicking and thinking of what to do next because she can't reach Amina and Zawadi is apparently on a bus heading to the hospital because of "a sick aunt" ; third emergency this month.
Both Mwanaidi and Juma are experts in their field but what they didn't realise is that as they grow, it will be less about them and more about working with and through people. I think it's not rocket science, arguing about whether leaders are born or made is a luxury these experts can't afford. This why my advice to the growing professional and entrepreneur is don't waste time debating on semantics, prepare for opportunities, prepare for the next level; its deifitnely coming!
In a future post, I will share on the other types of leadership and hit the nail on the head with how to prepare, Stay tuned🤗
