THE Zanzibar’s Minister responsible for Energy and Water, Mr Ali Juma Shamuhuna, said here on Monday that the islands plans to instal gas-powered electricity generators and solar panels.
Mr Shamhuna said the move was aimed at reducing the current over dependency on Tanzania mainland for electiry supply.
“We have investors who have already made research and identified sources of solar and gas for generation of electricity in Zanzibar and Pemba.
“These investors have similar projects in Dubai and Malaysia. We think it is possible to have alternative sources of power and reduce relying on erratic and expensive power supply from the mainland,” the minister said.
The minister was responding to concerns raised by legislators when debating a report by the Communication and Construction Committee.
Most of the reps asked the government to find alternative electricity generators.
“Heavy reliance on electricity from mainland may delay our development. Industries are under-performing and there is no efficiency just because of erratic power supply from the mainland,” said Salmin Awadhi Salmin (CCM-Magomeni).
Mr Shamuhuna said that efforts to have different sources of electricity were going on well and that the government was committed on the matter.
Meanwhile, Mr Shamuhuna said that Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO) owes Tanesco 40bn/- accumulated after the hiking of tariffs last year.
“Zanzibar will not pay that debt,” he declared.
“There is no justification for us to pay. The charges per unit in the mainland rose by 21 per cent, but for Zanzibar it was up by 168 per cent. why such double standards? We cannot pay,” he said.
He further said President Jakaya Kikwete had earlier directed that changes on tariffs should be the same in both sides of the Union.
The Reps also wanted to know why Zanzibar was having power rationing while it purchased 32 standby generators last year, but the minister did not respond to the question.
There are allegations that most of the purchased generators were sub-standard and defective

Just tell us how much were the rates before the hike?

What does matter here is the differences in dealing with the same issue! Even if the price had been 1Tsh per unite that take us to two diffrent figures 21 and 168,how does it sound to you?

You got my point very wrong pal.......what I understand is that Zanzibar had very low tarrif as compared to Tanganyika from the same TANESCO......in bringing the tariff to parity such hike is understandable
