A day before casting their votes to decide who is their president, members of parliament and other lower representatives in Zanzibar, people were today rushing for shopping in the city.
A day long research done by Jamii Forums team in the isle, saw people in huge numbers buying foods and other daily needs in bulk, contrary to their signature culture of buying for few days use.
Shoppers flocked at the main market, popularly known as Marikiti and other food stores in the city.
This shopping rush is a sign of people's readiness to prepare for any misfortunes that may arise during a voting day or after.
There are all significant signs that chaos may arise on the day or after as security has been tightened in the isle towards election day tomorrow; for special forces to vote earlier. The general public will go voting on Wednesday, October 28.
The main opposition party, ACT - Wazalendo has vowed to participate tomorrow as they think the ruling party, CCM has teamed up with Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) to manipulate votes in favour of Dr. Hussein Mwinyi, presidential candidate for the ruling party of 54 years in power.
Jamii Forums has been tipped that Maalim Seif, presidential candidate for the leading opposition party in the isle, ACT-Wazalendo will be blocked by security forces to move outside his residence in Chukwani tomorrow as he promised the mass yesterday while winding up his election campaigns at Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Zanzibar.
Following the shopping rush, traders at Marikiti were all happy as their sells went atop. Those who were selling perishable were even more jovial when talking to Jamii Forums.
"I am so happy, that I will not come tomorrow to the market as I have sold all my business, was worried as anybody else in Zanzibar for tomorrow's and day after elections, it is so sad, that on every elections in here our security is so uncertain, very sad," said Rashid Omari Makole while collection his empty sisal bag which was full of cucumbers before.
Our day marketing survey today shows that food items; rice, wheat flour, sugar, cooking oil were sold out of stock this evening in many street stores in Vuga, Michenzani and Saateni areas.
Shoppers may have a more conservative spending budget as a result of the upcoming election for fearing chaos from staunch supporters of main political parties against themselves or security forces which are claimed have been deployed from the mainland to ensure harmony and tranquility.
