37 Police Officers Killed in Banditry attack....R.I.P.

People who don't know a thing should not comment cause their stupidity shows. silence is wisdom don't show your stupidity. do you even know where the policemen were killed ? firstly does Tanzania have porous borders with several war torn countries or close to any rebel strong holds. your reply clearly shows you know nothing of Kenya's geography. to the north is S.Sudan formerly war torn and Ethiopia where the OLF rebels are stationed right next to the Kenyan border to the east is Somalia so you have the perfect recipe for proliferation of arms (even mexico has such problems with sophisticated weaponry coming in from the US and now Mali with the Tuareg fresh from libya with much newer weapons). If you go to Kenya's north everyone there has guns and has been using them since they were children even grenades are popular with the locals costing as little as Ksh 1000-1500 (multiple by 18 to get Tsh). Tanzania is lucky as it doesn't have such menaces. Secondly I'm sure you know of police reservists the only way to keep the desolate areas north from utter chaos is to put police reservist there these are civilians who are allowed to carry guns and given limited training on policing they come from the local tribes and are not educated probably semi literate most of those killed were not AP or regular police or the GSU (google it to understand the command structure and different units of the Kenyan police). Thirdly these raids are not carried out buy a few people but an entire village look at the media sometimes they number between 300- 500 raiders every Kenyan knows this fact. The fourth and most bitter point is that the police up north are underfunded and understaffed sometimes as few as 50 policemen to guard a total land size of mwanza region in TZ in some areas the government until recently has neglected the north so the police to civilian ratio is quite high 1:3000 people in some areas.

I wonder what would the Tanzanian police do if they went to a place e.g turkana in Kenya with a population of 850,000 people where 80% of the population both adults and children are running around with guns considering that this is just one tribe in the northern frontier and that they are about 16 such tribes up there running around with guns.I know you think that disarmament is an option but you have to consider that disarming these people will leave them helpless from attacks from across the border.e.g the merille tribesmen who frequently cross the Kenyan Ethiopian border to hunt down turkana tribesmen as a right of passage

The Kenyan military will never be used for such things they are only called out for extreme situations and that is on approval by parliament not the president alone. the last line of defence is the GSU paramilitaries and even they are rarely called out so making a judgment call on the entire police force based on the deaths of police reservists is utterly and extremely stupid and ignorant.

So the day that Tanzania faces such odds then you can make your glib comments. you should be grateful that all your neighbors are peaceful hence fewer gun crimes and madmen running around.

Maelezo marefu but still no Justification! Police wenu hawana Intelijinsia? Hivi well trained Police zaidi ya 60 wanaweza kudunguliwa karibia wote kishamba namna hiyo na kikundi cha raia wasio na mafunzo hata kama wanafikia mia tano?

Unasingizia eti "The fourth and most bitter point is that the police up north are underfunded and understaffed"

kama mnajua vizuri tabia na umiliki wa hovyo wa silaha wa wanakijiji na wao uwezo wao mdogo kwanini waende kizembe bila kuomba back up? kuna Intelijinsia hapo?

Like you were told your naivety shows, the police were killed when being mobilised to prepare for a raid on dawn, i must admit the number killed is the biggest since independence but when you are ambushed and the people killing you have got guns with a better shooting range than yours the answer is only bolt and hide whichever type of training you got.
Hao polisi wenu mnaosifu waleteni hapa miezi mbili na hawatofanya chochote tofauti na wakenya.

NIROBERA hivi mboa haonekani ili atuambie jinsi jeshi lao lilivyo imara na vifaa vya kisasa

the police were ambushed in a dreaded-valley where pastoralists take prestige in owning fire arms. no army was involved then but now they have been called-in.... Kenya has a superb military, for the police in this case it was a tactical error and ignorance of a well-known dangerous valley of death. RIP its sad. there are talks to convert the valley to a military training camp.

The caption clearly says police reservist/Homeguard ( A citizen enlisted to help with policing duties on a voluntary basis )

First off, there's too much hatin' towards Kenya, that simply means we are SUPERIOR and y'all wanna be LIKE US.

Secondly you are overwhelmingly undereducated in English, you cannot understand a simple term like "POLICE RESERVISTS" however much anyone tries to get it into your thick heads, just aint working. mkenya1987, hawawatu wana utiaji mob but haina beef tuko level yetu sisi.

Lastly, pardon me for being rude, but do you know the meaning of a goddamn ambush??? give me a break, even US MARINES, oohh yeah you heard me right us marines die all the time to ambushes, have you heard of "BLACK HAWK DOWN"?? not the movie though, 18, i repeat 18 us SPECIAL FORCES died in a day. le' me school u fools a bit, think of an ambush as a plane crash, its just a terrible accident, for the record those bandits can wipe out an entire tanzanian army squadron at THE VALLEY OF DEATH, thats the name of the place. You cant even walk there if your not a local you'll be gun sprayed to shit. Your are forgiven for your naivity just thank God you dont have it in your country its a real headache, dont wish for it you will loose lives lyk you've never imagined. Y'all braggin about your training n you havent seen shit yet, with your military air crafts fallin off the skies like flies without even gettin combat action. give us a brake.!

What a shame!

cr*p..you dont have the slightest clue of what you are saying. Get more information on whatever it is you think you know then get back with facts. RIP to the fallen forever you will be remembered.

The word is "armour" not "amour" as you put it, na kuna tofauti kubwa kati ya Jeshi na Polisi,
BTW poleni sana manyang'au ... .. na hii ndio inawafanya wakimbilie Tanzania na kukataa kukaa kwao kwa sababu life span yao ingekuwa fupi zaidi ... .... ..

hiyo ndo kusema?? na nani anatorokea Tz??. Extreme bullshit.

Intelijensia gani we unayo?? ilhali huelewi kiingereza. . .You dont have facts, you cant read for understanding and you like cheaptalk, while the facts are laid down for you in the simplest plain english.

Kenya's military has been ordered to deploy to the north-western Samburu region following a deadly ambush on police officers by cattle rustlers.
At least 42 police officers were killed - the most deadly attack on police in the East African nation's history.
The army will help track down "the bandits" and recover stolen animals and arms, a presidential statement said.
Hundreds of people have been fleeing the remote area fearing revenge attacks, officials and residents say.

A large police team, which included the regular police, reservists and paramilitary officers, was attacked over the weekend near the town of Baragoi in Samburu County's Suguta valley as they attempted to recover stolen cattle.
The attackers used sophisticated weapons such as anti-personnel bombs and rocket-propelled grenades, one local official said.
Kenya's National Security Council, which was chaired by President Mwai Kibaki, ordered the army's deployment and condemned "the heinous act of killing law enforcement officers".
"Everything will be done to ensure the culprits are apprehended and dealt with in accordance with the law," the statement from the president's office said
The council also said it wanted "peace, reconciliation and disarmament exercises" to be carried out in the affected areas.

The Turkanas are fleeing from Suguta area with their household goods, goats and cattle,”
Peter LegerdedBaragoi shopkeeper

Suguta is a remote valley where people from the Samburu and Turkana communities live in separate villages. They often steal cattle from each other, and clash over grazing rights and access to water points.
On Monday, a religious leader, who did not want to be named, told the BBC that residents in the area feared they may feel the wrath of the security forces, as those behind the killings had disappeared.
"The Turkanas are fleeing from Suguta area with their household goods, goats and cattle," said Peter Legerded, a shopkeeper from Baragoi town, which is outside the valley, told Reuters news agency.
Francis Karimi, a local government official in Baragoi, told AP news agency nearly 1,500 people had fled in buses from Lemerok, a Turkana village in the valley.
Deputy Police Spokesman Charles Owino has warned that in future the police will defend themselves in such circumstances.
"I am sending a very strong warning to the rustlers. It is not going to be business as usual and [they] must be prepared to die because we are not going to allow any police officer to die," Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper quoted him as saying on Wednesday in Nairobi.

Duh! My comment was posted as a clarification/response to bigirita's post/jibe! While I agree there are unsavoury comments about Kenya here, which are not shared by all members of the forum, your response especially to my post is entirely unwarranted, uncalled for and in bad taste. (Assuming I am the target of course!)

Most of the police are sent out there poorly armed, poor communication, and without a discrete operational mission, discrete in the sense that intercommunication and maybe willingness to conduct parrallel operations/cooperation btn the security personell is intermittent (as shown between AP vs GSU ongoing juxtapositioning). That was clearly shown in various forms, reaction, response etc...... I hate to believe that to be true be because it seems the Suguta valley seems like an alcatraz for police deploymentts.

In addition, there is no sound investment in security. While the former regime might have ignored reviewing everything that involved remunarations, one could laud their strategy and operational mission.

HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN!
I am baffled!!

so much conflict over grazing lands plus cattle rustling, is nomadic way of life really tenable in this age and time? My view is alternative land use must be actively pursued. Turkana area is not only awash with oil but has huge reserve of groundwater. Irrigated Agriculture is a viable alternative to nomadic way of life.
