ACT Wazalendo expresses deep concern over the reckless and aggressive decision by U.S. President Donald Trump’s Executive Order of February 8, 2025 to cut foreign aid to South Africa in response to its sovereign land reform (acts) and its principled stance against Israel’s genocide in Palestine.
This punitive measure to punish South Africa for addressing historical injustices and upholding international law at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), exposes U.S blatant disregard for African sovereignty and justice.
The United States has once again weaponized foreign aid to bully nations into subservience. However, this latest move marks a dangerous escalation—an outright attack on South Africa’s right to implement land reform that rectifies colonial-era dispossession. The objections to the Land Expropriation Act of 13 of 2024, which aims to redistribute land to historically marginalized South Africans, expose Washington’s role in protecting apartheid-era economic structures at the expense of justice.
Again, the decision to cut aid following South Africa’s bold submission to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), holding Israel accountable for genocide against Palestinians. Highlights the United States’ disregard for international law and its efforts to shield Israel from accountability for genocide. No nation should tolerate such brazen intimidation.
We condemn the U.S. for exploiting aid as a tool of coercion to undermine independent policymaking. And assert that aid cut is not merely an attack on South Africa; it is a dismissal of Africa’s collective right to chart its own future free from external manipulation. Such bullying must be met with unyielding resistance.
ACT Wazalendo urges all African frontline states to reject U.S hypocrisy, rally behind South Africa by reconsidering their diplomatic ties with the United States and seeking mutual partnership that respect equality, dignity and the right to self-governance. Africa must not allow itself to be blackmailed or coerced into submission through economic threats. Solidarity with South Africa is solidarity with the sovereignty of all African nations.
We reaffirm our unwavering support for South Africa’s struggle against apartheid’s lingering instruments and its courageous pursuit of justice for the people of Palestine. The party appreciates Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ANC firms’ commitment and stand against Trump’s pressure that seeks to stifle South Africa’s pursuit of justice and self-determination.
