Fanny Jackson Coppin was a pioneering Black educator, born into slavery in 1837. She overcame immense challenges to become one of the most influential educators of her time. Coppin's dedication to education and equality led her to become the first Black principal of the Female Department of the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia, a Quaker institution. When I came to the United States of America over 50 years ago; the first school that I attended was; Crispus Attucks Elementary school. The majority of the students there were African Americans.
I later learned that Crispus Attucks was the first American to die in the cause of freeing Americans from British control, during the 18th century.
