During World War II, Job Maseko, a South African war hero, sunk an enemy ship with an improvised bomb hidden in a milk container.

Maseko, a member of the South African Native Military Corps (NMC), was awarded the Military Medal for his “meritorious and courageous” action, which he described as demonstrating “ingenuity, resolve, and full disregard for personal safety.” But he was blocked from receiving the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest honour because he was BLACK.

About 80,000 black South Africans served in the Native Military Corps (NMC). After the war, they were given bicycles and boots, and sometimes a suit, as a reward. White soldiers received housing and land.

Members of the NMC were not issued firearms, but could carry traditional weapons, and served as non-combatants, working as labourers, guards or in a medical role.Maseko, himself, was a stretcher bearer for the allied forces in North Africa, where he rescued wounded men often under heavy fire.

Job Maseko became a prisoner of war in June 1942 when his commander surrendered to the Germans in Tobruk. There he was put to work on the docks unloading supplies.

Using knowledge that he had picked up working in gold mines in South Africa, on 21 July Maseko filled a small tin with gunpowder and placed it near some petrol drums in the hold of a ship which sank after the explosion, according to the official citation that went with his Military Medal.

He "displayed ingenuity, determination and complete disregard of personal safety from punishment by the enemy or from the ensuing explosion which set the vessel alight".

We salute you Job Maseko 🪖 [emoji954]

It is a not accidental that the two World Wars are sometimes referred to as White Wars. In most of the stories that are recorded it's only white heroes that appear. Blacks appear on as a passing people doing some minor works. The sad news is that even if they perform heroic deeds they are not rewarded and in most cases not even mentioned. History to honour our people should be written so that our children learn from our point of view. Otherwise they will be fed with wrong historical facts that always demean the black people.

It looks to me that Thomas Edison whom we have been taught that he made so many inventions was also a notorious patent thief. What a shame!
was also a notorious patent thief. What a shame!..
