Born on June 10, 1895, in Wichita, Kansas, Hattie was one of 13 children and the daughter of former slaves Henry and Susan McDaniel. Hattie’s father Henry McDaniel fought in the Civil War with the 122nd USCT and his mother, Susan Holbert, was a singer of religious music. In 1900, the family moved to Colorado, living first in Fort Collins and then in Denver, where Hattie graduated from Denver East High School.

After working as early as the 1910s as a band vocalist, Hattie McDaniel debuted as a maid in The Golden West (1932).

☞Today in History -- On today’s date 177 years ago, June 8, 1845, Andrew “Old Hickory” Jackson (1767-1845), seventh President of the United States of America, met his earthly demise at the age of 78 when he died from the effects of chronic consumption (tuberculosis), dropsy (edema), & heart failure at Hermitage Plantation, his home at Nashville, Tennessee.

☞Some sources incorrectly indicate that the first-ever photographs of U.S. presidents were made in 1845, the year of President Jackson’s death. At least three presidents were photographed during that year, including Presidents Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren (1782-1862), & James Knox Polk (1795-1849); however, there were two other presidents who are known to have been photographed before 1845 -- John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) was photographed in 1843, & the very first president to be photographed was William Henry Harrison (1773-1841) who was photographed in 1841 during the last year of his life.

☞Music-History Trivia: U.S. Army Major General & future U.S. president Andrew “Old Hickory” Jackson’s victory at the January 8, 1815 Battle of New Orleans, the last battle of the War of 1812, made “Old Hickory” a national hero, & shortly thereafter the traditional Old-Time tune “The Eighth of January,” also known as “Jackson’s Victory,” was composed to commemorate the battle. In the mid-20th Century, noted musician & songwriter James Corbitt Morris (1907-1998), better known as Jimmie Driftwood, wrote the song “The Battle of New Orleans,” to the tune of The Eighth of January. Jimmie Driftwood’s song was covered by noted Country & Rockabilly singer John Gale “Johnny” Horton (1925-1960), whose version became a hit single, rising to the top of the “Billboard Hot 100” chart in 1959.

143 years ago in 1879, Prince Imperial Napoléon IV, heir to the Bonaparte monarchy is killed during the Anglo-Zulu War.

Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte was born in Paris during the Second French Empire. His father Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte was the nephew of Napoléon Bonaparte and seized power in 1852 anointing himself Emperor as Napoléon III. The Second French Empire under his leadership doubled the size of its overseas empire and repaired relations with Great Britain. However in July 1870 Napoléon III would enter into a war with Prussia with no allies and an inferior army. He would be captured in battle and Paris would abandon him declaring the Third Republic of France. The Bonaparte family would go into exile in England where the young Prince Imperial Napoléon IV would receive military training.

The young Prince was beloved and popular within political elite circles. He was a serious contender to marry one of Queen Victoria’s daughters, but the Prince first desired to experience military action. After applying great pressure he would get the opportunity to travel to South Africa and assist the British in their ongoing war with the Zulu people. He was attached to the staff of a Colonel in the Royal Engineers but the Prince’s eagerness for action found him volunteering to go along with reconnaissance missions as often as he could. Concerned for his safety, the British assigned personal guards to protect the young reckless Prince.

On the morning of June 1st the Prince insisted the reconnaissance mission planned for that day go earlier without full strength. The party dismounted and was resting in an abandoned Zulu village when suddenly 40 Zulu warriors ambushed them. The men escorting the Prince mounted their horses and did not attempt to fight, fleeing for their lives. Napoléon’s horse was spooked and began to run off before he could be fully mounted in the saddle. The Prince held onto a strap as the horse carried him to safety but the strap broke and the horse ran off with his carbine and a sword that belonged to Napoléon I. His right arm was trampled and he pulled out a revolver with his left hand and began to run away, but four Zulu warriors rushed the Prince and one of their assegai was thrown through his leg. The Prince pulled the assegai from his leg and tried to fight with it using his trampled arm while shooting at the oncoming Zulus. He was overwhelmed and killed, and when his body was recovered it had 18 assegai wounds.

The Prince’s death sent shockwaves throughout England and France. He was only 23 years old and buried next to his father. His grieving mother made a pilgrimage to the location he was killed. And the best chance for a restoration of the Bonapartist Monarchy had died with him.

In 1958, Nigeria's[emoji1184] Chinua Achebe wrote his first novel book "Things Fall Apart" at the age of 28, which has sold over 20 million copies and has been translated to over 50 languages.

• It was ranked as one of the Greatest Books Ever Written in a list by Encyclopedia Brittanica in 2018.

• It was on number 5 on BBC's 100 Stories That Shaped The World.

• It was also among the 100 books that were featured on the TV series, The Great American Read.

• In 2011, Chinua Achebe forced 50 Cent to rename his forthcoming new movie "Things Fall Apart". He was contacted by Achebe's legal team that he couldn't use the title. Even when he offered Achebe $1 million dollars, Achebe felt insulted and rejected the money. 50 Cent later re-named his movie "All Things Fall Apart".

Today’s geneticist have analyzed the DNA [emoji3459] of the Daasanach people which indicates that they are more closely related to Nilo-Saharan and Niger-Congo-speaking groups that inhabit Tanzania than they are to the Cushitic and Semitic Afro-Asiatic-speaking populations of Ethiopia. This implies that the Daasanach were originally Nilotic-Saharan speakers, sharing common origins with the Pokot. In the 19th century, the Nilotic ancestors of these two populations are believed to have begun separate migrations, with one group heading southwards into the African Great Lakes region and the other group settling in southern Ethiopia. There, the early Daasanach Nilotes would have come into contact with a Cushitic-speaking population, and eventually adopted this group’s Afro-Asiatic language

[emoji1960] 𝗥𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗰𝗡𝗮𝗶𝗿 received a bachelor’s degree in physics from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro, in 1971 and a doctoral degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, in 1976. At MIT, McNair worked on the then recently invented chemical lasers, which used chemical reactions to excite molecules in a gas such as hydrogen fluoride or deuterium fluoride and thus produced the stimulated emission of laser radiation. McNair became a staff physicist at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, where he continued studying lasers.

In 1978 McNair was selected as a mission specialist astronaut by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He, along with Guion S. Bluford, Jr., and Frederick Gregory, were the first African Americans selected as astronauts. His first spaceflight was on the STS-41B mission of the space shuttle Challenger (February 3–11, 1984). During that flight astronaut Bruce McCandless became the first person to perform a space walk without being tethered to a spacecraft. McNair operated the shuttle’s robotic arm to move a platform on which an astronaut could stand. This method of placing an astronaut in a specified position using the robotic arm was used on subsequent shuttle missions to repair satellites and assemble the International Space Station.

McNair was assigned to the STS-51L mission of the space shuttle Challenger in January 1985. The primary goal of the mission was to launch the second Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS-B). It also carried the Spartan Halley spacecraft, a small satellite that McNair, along with mission specialist Judith Resnik, was to release and pick up two days later using Challenger’s robotic arm after Spartan observed Halley’s Comet during its closest approach to the Sun. However, most of the mission’s fame was due to the selection of teacher Christa McAuliffe as a payload specialist. She was to give at least two lessons from space to students around the world. Challenger launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on January 28, 1986, but the orbiter disappeared in an explosion 73 seconds after liftoff, at an altitude of 14,000 metres (46,000 feet). McNair and the six other astronauts in the crew did not survive.

The Mau Mau resistance, the struggle that gave birth to the independent of Kenya [emoji1139].

The Mau Mau rebellion (1952–1960), also known as the Mau Mau uprising, Mau Mau revolt or Kenya Emergency, was a war in the British Kenya Colony (1920–1963) between the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA), also known as the Mau Mau, and the British authorities.

Dominated by the Kikuyu people, Meru people and Embu people, the KLFA also comprised units of Kamba and Maasai peoples who fought against the white European colonist-settlers in Kenya, the British Army, and the local Kenya Regiment (British colonists, local auxiliary militia, and pro-British Kikuyu people).

The capture of rebel leader Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi on 21 October 1956 signalled the defeat of the Mau Mau, and essentially ended the British military campaign.However, the rebellion survived until after Kenya's independence from Britain, driven mainly by the Meru units led by Field Marshal Musa Mwariama and General Baimungi. Baimuingi, one of the last Mau Mau generals, was killed shortly after Kenya attained self-rule.

The KLFA failed to capture widespread public support. Frank Füredi, in The Mau Mau War in Perspective, suggests this was due to a British policy of divide and rule.The Mau Mau movement remained internally divided, despite attempts to unify the factions. The British, meanwhile, applied the strategy and tactics they developed in suppressing the Malayan Emergency (1948–60).The Mau Mau Uprising created a rift between the European colonial community in Kenya and the metropole, and also resulted in violent divisions within the Kikuyu community: "Much of the struggle tore through the African communities themselves, an internecine war waged between rebels and so-called 'loyalists' – Africans who took the side of the government and opposed Mau Mau."Suppressing the Mau Mau Uprising in the Kenyan colony cost Britain £55 million and caused at least 11,000 deaths among the Mau Mau and other forces, with some estimates considerably higher. This included 1,090 executions by hanging.
