SES, the Luxembourg based satellite owner and operator, has announced a 15-year contract with Platco Digital to broadcast its new free-to-air service in South Africa, with future plans to expand across Southern Africa.
Platco Digital said on Tuesday (23 July) that it had entered into partnerships with a range of companies including satellite providers, leading set-top-box (STB) distributors, major retailers and broadcasters.
Platco aims to launch OpenView HD in October 2013 – a free-to-view, direct to home (DTH) satellite TV offering with approximately 15 channels.
The contract, announced on Wednesday (24 July), for two transponders, with an option for additional capacity in 2014, will allow the Direct-to-Home (DTH) transmission of a new TV channel platform by Platco Digital to audiences in South Africa’s urban and remote areas.
SES will provide the satellite capacity on the SES-5 satellite at 5 degrees East, one of the company’s flagship orbital slots, which supports customers developing the Digital DTH TV markets in Africa.
Platco Digital and e.tv are owned by Sabido Investments, a South African media group with holdings in a variety of broadcasting, content, production and distribution businesses.
“This agreement is an important step for the growth of the major South African free-to-air broadcaster and the development of Direct-to-Home TV reception in Africa’s dynamic emerging markets,” said Ferdinand Kayser, chief commercial officer of SES.
Sabido Investment’s CEO Marcel Golding said: “Platco Digital will offer local and international television businesses the opportunity to broadcast free-to-air channels on the DTH platform, in

Platco Digital, the company behind the upcoming OpenView HD (OVHD) satellite television service, has more than its initial free channel bouquet up its sleeve.
Rumours are circulating in the industry that Platco’s plans include offering OpenView customers a satellite Internet connection in future.
Asked specifically whether they have such plans, Platco said it would only share further developments “closer to the time”, but confirmed that there will be other added products at a later stage.
“Now our main focus is to get OVHD off the ground,” a spokesperson for Platco said.
Earlier this week MyBroadband reported that Platco Digital, a sister company to E-tv, would offer a 15-channel satellite TV service in South Africa without charging a monthly subscription fee.
Platco has since confirmed it will be launching with “approximately” 15 channels in October 2013, working only with already licensed broadcasters.
This will include a mix of standard and high definition channels, with at least 5 being HD, Platco

Why are you increasing prices?
This season, Al Jazeera Sports is adding more top quality football (Barclays Premier League) and 4 new HD channels with more games broadcasted in HD.

Which channels will have Barclays Premier League football on them?
The scheduling of our channels is still ongoing and we will communicate this as soon as it is finalised.

Will I still be able to watch Barclays Premier League on Abu Dhabi Sports?
No. Al Jazeera Sports has the exclusive rights to BPL, so you will need to be an AJS subscriber to watch Barclays Premier League football.

What will there be on the new HD channels?
The scheduling of our channels is still ongoing and we will communicate this as soon as it is finalised.

Why can I not subscribe to the new packages now? When will they be available online ?
We are preparing for the beginning of the new season, and needed to suspend our sales for a short time during this period. Our new packages will be available from August 1st and you will be able to purchase them through your usual dealer. If you want to know the closest dealer to you, please visit our website www.jsc-cards.com

Why are the long-term packages only valid until 31st May 2014?

Do I need to use a Humax-branded Al Jazeera Sports box to receive the service after August?
If you are an existing subscriber you will be able to continue to receive the service with your current box, however we strongly recommend using a Humax Al Jazeera Sports box for the best quality of service.

Four days to go!!!! Lets see those prices. Seems like they will not be marrying receivers with cards after all!

The information seems confusing. On the other hand they are saying this will be a free-to-view, direct to home (DTH) satellite TV offering on the SES-5 satellite at 5 degrees East, which sound like FTA. If so this could be good news to us at the bottom south of sub-Saharan Africa. On the other hand they are saying they will be working only with already licensed broadcasters. Who are these? E-TV? Uuum, doesnt sound FTA like. If so not so good news because we all know how E-TV loves Nagra3. Its a wait and see.

Mah-mah123,
It appears that from our end, with usual equipment (120Cm dishes offset), we will only be able to nab the following:

JSC1 & 2: Nilesat 201; 12245 V 27500; 3/4 FEC;
HD1 and HD2: Nilesat 201; 12264 H 27500; DVBS-S2; 2/3; 8PSK (UEFA Championship, Europa League);
JSC +9 and +10; Eutelsat 7 West A; 12475 V 27500; 3/4 (NBA, Fox Sports – English)

However, to get JSC +1. +2, +3, +4, +5, +6, +7, +8, +9 we will need to point at the following using bigger dishes:
Nile 101 and 102: JSC+1 ….. +10;
Arabsat Badr-6: 12379 H 27500; 3/4; JSC +1 …. + 5;
Arabsat Badr-6: 12341 H 27500; 3/4: JSC +6 …. + 10

How much are the JSC cards going for? Which is the best and cheapest method to acquire the cards?
I am optimistic they cards wont be married to Humax Aljazeera decoders after all.

Came across this somewhere nikajionea huruma. ""One in-line satellite amplifier will be needed for eachsatellite receiver which has a longer than 35 metre coaxialcable feed from the dish. For best results, mount theamplifier about half way down the cable on cable runs of 35metres or more.In all cases it is best to upgrade to superior quality CAIapproved WF100 or PF100 Coaxial Cable, rather than fittingan in-line amplifier. WF100/PF100 will greatly reduce signalloss when compared to lower quality cables like RG6 or WF65twin. In fact, RG6 and WF65 should not be used for long cableruns in excess of 25 metres.""".jamani my seniors sasa hii WF100 ndio gani na nitaipata wapi?

Apart from nilesat, which other meaningful bird can I point my 1.8cm dish to?
