@All those who can should try to get ST-2 @88e on KU. The sat has press TV, I-Film and up to last week it had IRIB 1-5 and other goodies. The foot print is similar to yahsat 1A which should be receivable in East Africa.

@All, Is it possible to get a sattelite or cable modem which is not married to any pay company? .....How much can I cough?

Thousands of DStv and Zuku
subscribers will be forced to buy new
decoders to access free-to-air
channels after the December 13
switch-off deadline for analogue TV
signals in Nairobi.
The Communications Commission of
Kenya said on Wednesday that the
present decoders provided by the
two pay-TV operators would no
longer transmit free-to-air stations
such as NTV, KBC, KTN, Citizen and
K24 after the switch-off.
This means that the subscribers will
have to either invest in new gadgets
that convert analogue signals to
digital format or buy upgraded
decoders from service providers like
StarTimes and GOtv.
The regulator said DStv and Zuku’s
decoders’ use a different technology
from the Digital Video Broadcast
Technology 2 (DVB-T2) linked to the
migration, prompting a protest from
the latter.
“We have only two pay-TV providers
— that is StarTimes and GOtv —
whose decoders are compliant with
the DVB-T2 technology,” said CCK
director-general Francis Wangusi.
He added that DStv and Zuku
subscribers would have to invest in
new set boxes to convert analogue
signals to digital format. The
subscribers will, however, still use
the decoders to view the various pay
bouquets.
In August last year, CCK revised the
minimum specifications for DVB-T2
set-top boxes, making the
conditional access feature optional
for DVB-T2 set top boxes intended
for use to receive free-to-air TV
content.
The conditional access feature
allowed the pay television providers
to control what their subscribers
watch and the review was aimed at
ensuring that pay-TV subscribers
access the free-to-air channels even
when in default of payment.
(Read: Pay-TV subscribers get free
access to public channels )
This review has seen pay-TV
providers such as Startimes and
GOtv — a subsidiary of DStv —
upgrade their decoders. StarTimes
launched its new models retailing
at Sh4,999 in May and said old
subscribers who bought set-top
boxes at a subsidised rate of
Sh1,999 would have to pay the
difference to qualify for the new
model.
This was followed by the launch of
GOtv’s new decoders in the market
dubbed GOtv Open that allows
viewers to receive local free-to-air
channels in digital quality for a one-
off administration fee.
The introduction of the new models
by StarTimes and GOtv came on the
backdrop of a demand by CCK that
all pay TV providers give their
customers access to at least five
free-to-air channels like KBC, NTV,
QTV, KTN, Citizen, K24 and Kiss TV,
regardless of whether they were up-
to-date on their monthly
subscription fees or not.
With the new model subscribers can
access the channels without
attracting monthly subscription fees.
The switch to digital signal is
expected to boost investors in digital
terrestrial TV, broadcast mobile TV,
commercial wireless broadband
services, as well as help in disaster
relief while offering viewers wider
choice.

Competition in Kenya’s television
broadcast market is expected to
increase as the industry regulator
announced it has issued temporary
licences to 84 new stations.
The Communications Commission of
Kenya (CCK) on Wednesday said the
new providers would be licensed
under the digital broadcasting
regime, which is replacing the
analogue platform.
It was not clear whether the new
operators will offer free-to-air
services or pay television that is
currently dominated by DStv.
“During the quarter, the Commission
issued temporary authorisations to
10 new television (TV) stations to
provide TV signals on the digital
platform thereby bringing the total
number of entities with temporary
authorisation to 84,” said the CCK in
an industry report released
Wednesday evening.
“The Commission continued to
ensure plurality and diversity in the
broadcasting industry.”
Unlike in the analogue broadcasting
the new operators will not be
required to establish broadcast
infrastructure like masts, but will be
hosted by licensed signal
distributors like Signet and Pan
African Network at a fee.
This is expected to lower costs of
operations and remove an entry
barrier that has partly contributed
to the dominance of DStv and the
collapse of its rivals like GTV and
Smart TV.
The new operators have been issued
with the temporary permits pending
the conclusion of a case lodged by
Media Owners Association barring
CCK from migrating them to the new
digital licensing regime.
READ: Media owners get reprieve in
signal distribution row
The Media Owners Association won
court orders barring CCK from
shepherding the migration because
the regulator was not an
independent player as envisaged
under Section 34 of Constitution.
Earlier, the information ministry
noted that new licensing regime will
provide for video on demand, which
allows subscribers to buy specific
programmes instead of packages that
have made the pay-TV market
expensive and forced consumers to
buy content they do not need.
Most of the permits, the ministry
said, were to be issued to thematic
areas such as sports, culture,
environment, religion and industry.
This model would exert competition
pressure on pay television providers
such as DStv, Zuku, My TV and free-
to- air stations.
The Business Daily failed to
establish whether the operation
model of the new players has
changed from this earlier position.
CCK did respond to our questions on
the issue.
DStv has largely been riding on the
exclusive rights it holds on key
content such as sports, including the
English Premiership League, to win a
following of about three million
subscribers in several African
markets.

where did you buy your card from

I'm curious too, I've been watching JSC sports via CS for sometime now, but now need a card. i've gave up onCS when my Skybox blew up. Now using an astrovox temporarily.
just wondering have you ever tried JSC cards on an Astrovox? from the little I know JSC cards are not "married to receivers" hence the reason why CS works.
