Govt to suspend issuance of sugar import permits
THE government has said that it will suspend the issuance of sugar import permits to companies that are local producers of the product starting next year.
Agriculture Minister, Prof Adolf Mkenda said the shortage of the product in the country is not due to the shortage of sugarcane but sugar manufacturers’ failure to increase their factories sugarcane processing capacity.
Prof Mkenda made the remarks in Dodoma on Thursday as he was addressing delegates of the 7th agricultural stakeholders conference held at Asante Estates at Ntyuka area.
“The government will not issue sugar import permits to local manufacturers from next year. By 2022, the country would be capable of producing enough sugar for local consumption because efforts are ongoing to expand existing factories as well as construction of new industries,” said the minister.
Minister Mkenda was concerned that more than 350,000 tonnes of sugarcane produced by out growers at the Kilombero valley in Morogoro Region are destroyed over lack of market.
He said Tanzania imports more than 40,000 tonnes of the sweetener each year, an amount that could be produced locally. He urged the sugar factories to expand their factories to be able to purchase all the sugarcane produced by small scale farmers.
Prof Mkenda warned against illegal importation of sugar in the country’s markets insisting legal measures will be taken against anyone proved to have violated the set regulations.
He added that expansion of the factories would help in creating millions of jobs for young Tanzanians as the demand for sugarcane will increase.
In February this year, the minister said that the government will gave the mandate for sugar importation to the Sugar Board of Tanzania (SBT).
The comment signals change in the government policy, which has been allowing traders to import sugar to offset the shortages.
Recent reports indicate that Tanzania's demand for domestic sugar was 470,000 metric tons, while the country's five sugar processing factories had the capacity of producing 378,000 tonnes in 2019.

IRDP, UNDP set up modern sunflower plant in Kondoa
THE Institute of Rural Development Planning (IRDP) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has installed a modern sunflower processing industry in Kondoa District, Dodoma Region to scale up production of edible oil.
Dubbed: ‘Pahi Sunflower Processing Industry’ the ultramodern facility is expected to play a vital role in assuring that sunflower farmers in the district are assured of a reliable market for their produce.
IRDP senior lecturer and projects coordinator Bonamax Mbasa, told The Guardian during an interview that the state owned varsity has decided to establish the factory to supplement efforts by the government to curtail the shortage of edible oil in the country.
According to national coordinator for sunflower at the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) Frank Reuben the demand for edible oil in Tanzania is currently at 650,000 tonnes with production of sunflower in the country now at 290,000 tonnes.
In Tanzania, sunflowers contribute to at least 68.9 per cent of all edible oil produced with the remaining 30.1 per cent coming from other crops including palm oil.
Recently, the government through the parent ministry tasked the Agriculture Seed Agency (ASA) to embark on a strategic project to produce enough sunflower seeds and distribute to the farmers within the country at affordable prices.
In a similar strategy, the government is working out several strategies, including plans to start providing subsidy for sunflower seeds, aiming to improve production of sunflower from 790,000 to 1,600,000 tonnes.
On June 13 this year, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa launched the national strategic campaign for the mass investment and production of sunflower grains in the country.
The premier expressed dismay over the poor manner to which the country imports more than 365,000 metric tons (MT) of edible oil annually which costs the government at least 443bn/-.
According to the Deputy agriculture minister Hussein Bashe, the parent ministry was determined to increase the availability of improved sunflower seeds at a tune of more than 3,900 tonnes, compared to 886 tonnes estimated to be produced during the year 2021.
