Airbus said on Wednesday it had signed an agreement to sell two commercial passenger planes to Uganda as part of the country’s plan to revive its national airline which has been defunct for years.

The government of long-ruling President Yoweri Museveni has said restarting the national carrier will help Uganda take a slice of the region’s growing aviation business and also invigorate the service sector of the economy.

Kenya Airways, South Africa Airways and Ethiopian Airlines currently dominate the country’s air travel business.

In a statement on the memorandum of understanding signed at the Farnborough airshow in the UK, Airbus said Uganda would purchase two A330-800neo aircrafts.

An iteration of Airbus’ A330 widebody airliner, the A330-800neo features new wings and Rolls-Royce’s new generation Trent 7000 engines.

Airbus’ chief commercial officer, Eric Schulz said in the statement that the planes would “bring a range of benefits offering unrivalled efficiencies with the most modern cabin. We look forward to see the A330-800neo flying in the colours of Uganda.”

Though no funds were provided in this year’s budget for the airline, Finance Minister Matia Kasaija said the money will be paid from both domestic resources and borrowing.

“Some we are using our own money, we have already made a deposit for the other (money) we are in talks with various people to raise it,” he said.

Founded by Uganda’s former dictator Idi Amin in 1976, Uganda Airlines was liquidated in the 1990s by Museveni’s government under a broader programme to privatise troubled state firms and open up the economy to private enterprise.

Uganda has also signed a separate MoU with Canada’s Bombadier for the supply of four CRJ900 planes at the cost of $190 million.

The carriers will mainly serve on the shorter regional routes while the Airbus will serve the long haul routes.

The country is keen to expand its aviation industry, especially as it prepares to start pumping crude oil from fields in its west, a development expected drive up business traveller arrivals.

A new international airport, financed partly with UK credit, is being built near the fields, primarily to service the oil industry.

Once completed it will be the country’s second international airport after Entebbe, south of the capital Kampala, which is also being expanded with a loan from China to handle more passengers and cargo.

“This agreement demonstrates our ambition for economic growth supported by a robust aviation industry,” Ephraim Bagenda, chief executive officer of Uganda Airlines said in the statement.

Uganda Airlines, the national carrier of Uganda, has signed a memorandum of understanding for two A330-800neo, the new version of the best-selling A330 widebody airliner, featuring new wings, new Rolls-Royce’s latest-generation Trent 7000 engines, new systems and a new ‘Airspace’ cabin interior.

The agreement was announced at Farnborough airshow earlier today by Ephraim Bagenda, CEO of Uganda Airlines and Eric Schulz, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer.

Uganda Airlines plans to use the A330-800neos to build its international long-haul network with the aircraft offering cutting-edge technologies along with most efficient operations. The aircraft will feature a three-class cabin layout comprising 20 Business, 28 Premium Economy and 213 Economy seats.

This agreement demonstrates our ambition for economic growth supported by a robust aviation industry. The A330-800neo combines low operating costs, long range flying capability and high levels of comfort. We are looking forward to launch operations and offer our customers best-in-class service”, said Ephraim Bagenda, CEO of Uganda Airlines.

We are delighted to welcome Uganda Airlines among our A330neo customers, the A330neo will bring a range of benefits offering unrivalled efficiencies combined with the most modern cabin. We look forward to see the A330-800neo flying in the colours of Uganda”, said Eric Schulz, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer.

Launched in July 2014, the A330neo Family is the new generation A330, comprising two versions: the A330-800 and A330-900 sharing 99 percent commonality. It builds on the proven economics, versatility and reliability of the A330 Family, while reducing fuel consumption by about 25 percent per seat versus previous generation competitors and increasing range by up to 1,500 nm compared to the majority of A330s in operation.
The A330neo is powered by Rolls-Royce’s latest-generation Trent 7000 engines and features a new wing with increased span and new A350 XWB-inspired Sharklets. The cabin provides the comfort of the new Airspace amenities.

Government is in advanced stages of procuring two more aircraft, as efforts to revive Uganda Airlines hit overdrive.

Earlier on Wednesday, Canadian plane manufacturer, Bombardier announced that it has signed a purchase agreement with Uganda for four CRJ900 aircraft.

The four bombardiers will cost an estimated $190 million (about Shs 711 billion). And, today European company, Airbus in statement, confirmed the signing of memorandum of understanding between itself and Uganda Airlines for the purchase of two A330-800neo aircraft.

This means the national carrier which is being revived, will have 6 planes. Cabinet early this month concluded discussions on revival of the national carrier. The two A330-800neo aircraft will each feature, according to the statement, three class cabin layout comprising of 20 Business seats, 28 Premium Economy and 213 Economy seats.

Government had set December 2018 as the date for Uganda Airlines to resume operations, but this has been pushed to April 2019. Government needs at least Shs 1.3 trillion to purchase the six aircraft but only Shs 139 billion was budgeted for in 2018/19 financial year.

Recently, State Minister for Planning, David Bahati said government was looking at acquiring loans from banks including China's Exim bank among other investment possibilities. Revamping Uganda Airlines was top on President Yoweri Museveni's must-do list after 2016 presidential elections.

During the inauguration of the cabinet in October 2016, Museveni directed the line ministry to commence work on the task. Museveni argued that "a national airline would help the country save $420 million per year that Ugandans spend on air travel with foreign owned aircraft. Uganda Airlines started operations in 1977 and wound up in May 2001.

Uganda Airlines revival: gov't procures six planes

When Uganda airline collapsed. ..Agakhan invested in a new private airline called "Air Uganda" ,,, it has 4 planes, on the first year of operation, I carried 70, 000 persengers with a load factor of 70% full...

Air Uganda - Wikipedia
Air Uganda was formed in 2007 and began commercial flight operations on 15 November 2007. [6] It transported over 70,000 passengers within its first twelve months, with an average load factor of 70 percent between Entebbe and Juba, South Sudan . The load factor between Entebbe and Nairobi averaged 60 percent during the first year of operation..

Soon after a few years of operations By 2014 'Air Uganda' too collapsed just like its predecessor... Now the Ugandan government is starting off by buying long haul wide body airplanes..
......

Same situation in Tanzania, after the collapse of air Tz and a few years without a National airline, fastjet came in an soon became the defacto national airline, after a few years of operations ..fastjet has failed to make any impact, it has even cancledd some other routes all together.... It has 6 aircrafts flying across east and southern africa.... And now ATCL is bieng revived....

----'

As far as that is concerned, its good that all the Major East African countries are reviving their ailines, its good for the region if we can have an established aviation industry...

Lakini kama wewe Geza umeleta hii taarifa huku kwa Kenya news ili kutuonyesha KQ iko taabani , unajisumbua mwenyewe...nothing new here, Uganda airlines is replacing failed Air Uganda and ATCL is replacing failed Fastjet...my honest advice to you'all newbies is that dont try and start a price war with well established airlines like Kenya airways... charge fair resonable and economically sustainable prices for your tickets, suvive first and find your footing bedore you begin any price wars...
