Lufthansa has announced a new tranche of summer 2021 route additions from Frankfurt airport, this time focusing on long-haul tourist destinations.

From March 29, 2021 the carrier will launch flights from Frankfurt to Punta Cana, followed by a route to Mombasa on March 31, which will continue onto to Zanzibar. Then from June 3 Lufthansa will add a thrice weekly service to Anchorage.

Two current winter routes to Mauritius and Male will also be extended into summer 2021.
Flights to Punta Cana, Anchorage and Mauritius will be operated by Brussels Airlines through cooperation with Eurowings, while those to Male, Mombasa and Zanzibar will be operated by Lufthansa.

The carrier said that launching additional tourist destinations had been a focus for the airline “even before the coronavirus pandemic”, adding that its goal was to “actively shape the future of tourism”.

Last month Lufthansa announced the addition of 15 new summer routes from Frankfurt (some of which are a continuation of existing winter routes) to destinations in Greece, Spain, Egypt, Croatia, Cyprus, Italy, Tunisia and Bulgaria.

At the time Harry Hohmeister, member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, said that the demand for vacation and leisure trips “is recovering much faster than that for business trips”.

KLM and Lufthansa to BOTH begin Zanzibar; fast-growing from Europe

KLM and Lufthansa to BOTH begin Zanzibar; fast-growing from Europe

KLM is to begin Zanzibar on 10 December 2020, followed by Lufthansa from Frankfurt on 31 March. Zanzibar will be KLM’s sixth destination in East Africa after Dar Es Salaam, Entebbe, Kigali, Kilimanjaro, and Nairobi. And it will be Lufthansa’s fourth, after Addis Ababa and Nairobi and, also coming, Mombasa.

KLM and Lufthansa are both to begin Zanzibar, Tanzania, and both carriers will have direct competition.

KLM will start on 10 December, with a twice-weekly service using 294-seat B787-9s. It’ll route Amsterdam – Zanzibar – Dar Es Salaam – Amsterdam.

Lufthansa, meanwhile, will launch Frankfurt – Zanzibar on 31 March. Its twice-weekly offering by A330-300s will be via Mombasa – also new – in both directions.

KLM’s announcement builds on Cairo, Cork, and Southampton so far starting/restarting in 2020. These will be joined by Poznan from 25 October and Riyadh from 7 December. Austin is now expected to begin in 2021.

Lufthansa’s new Frankfurt – Mombasa – Zanzibar will be joined in S21 by 13 short-haul and similarly very outbound leisure services. This includes six new routes to Greece.

Lufthansa is focusing more than ever on the local German market, hardly surprising at the moment. Indeed, in 2020 it has started Gran Canaria, Rhodes, and Tenerife South from Frankfurt.

KLM and Lufthansa latest to Zanzibar; market has grown strongly

Europe – Zanzibar has grown well in recent years, with 367,000 seats recorded in 2019. This was by up 148%, or 219,000, over 2015.

Neos was the largest European operator to the Tanzanian island, with 107,000 seats. The second was Turkish Airlines, which began Zanzibar in 2016; this airline accounts for most of the recent growth.

Last year we analysed Turkish Airlines and the MEB3’s total network distribution. Turkish Airlines had by far the most weekly frequencies to/from Africa.

Zanzibar was linked to 12 European airports in 2019, so pre-coronavirus. Milan Malpensa was by far the top with three in ten seats.

Not surprisingly, Italy was the leading country for non-stop service to Zanzibar, with four Italian airports having just under half of all seats. Germany was third after Turkey.

Zanzibar – Europe; sixth freedoms also key

Aside from non-stops, discussed above, sixth freedom operators were also key to Europe. In particular, Ethiopian Airlines, flydubai (and also with Emirates to Europe), Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines.

In the randomly chosen week beginning 16 December 2019, Ethiopian had a daily service using a hodgepodge of aircraft: A350-900s, B737-800s, B777-200LRs, and B787-8s and -9s. Its A350s were used most and they routed via Kilimanjaro in both directions.

We explored Ethiopian’s network in February.
flydubai, meanwhile, had a 14-weekly service. Of these, seven terminated in Zanzibar, while the other half continued to Dar Es Salaam and back via Zanzibar.

We looked at flydubai’s closer-than-ever relationship with Emirates earlier this year.
Across all carriers, the largest unserved European markets were Paris, London, Vienna, Munich, and Copenhagen, with Paris by far number-one.

India has now entered into an air bubble agreement with the Netherlands and Tanzania. With the addition of these two countries, the country’s air bubble arrangement now extends to 20 destinations. The air bubble with the Netherlands is effective from 1 November.

Regarding the air bubble with the Netherlands, a circular from the Ministry of Civil Aviation said: “India has created an air bubble with the Netherlands from 1 November 2020 and would remain valid till resumption of scheduled international flights between the two countries.” The circular also mentions that Indian nationals or nationals of Nepal or Bhutan stranded in any country in the EU/Schengen area, South America or Africa as well as all OCI cardholders and PIO cardholders holding passports of any country, can travel on the flights from the Netherlands to India.

All foreign nationals (from any country in the EU/Schengen area, South America or Africa only) intending to visit India for any purpose (including their dependents on the appropriate category of dependent visa) except those on Tourist Visa and seamen from EU/Schengen area, South America or Africa can also travel on these flights.

Regarding the air bubble with Tanzania, the Ministry of Civil Aviation sent out a tweet, saying: “An air bubble arrangement has been established between India and Tanzania. Designated carriers of both countries are permitted to operate flights between the two countries.”

Hinting at an increase in air bubble arrangements between India and other countries, union civil aviation minister, Hardeep Singh Puri said: “The mission to bring back stranded citizens began on 6 May 2020 and is now poised to dovetail into Phase-7. International travel of more than 28 lakh people has been facilitated so far. More flights & air bubble arrangements are in place to reach out to more. VBM continues…”

Before this recent development, India had air bubble arrangements with Bangladesh, Oman, Bhutan, Kenya, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Canada, France, Germany, Iraq, Japan, the Maldives, Nigeria, Qatar, the UAE, the UK, Ukraine and the US.
