Cargo handling at airports increases by 32pc in 2021
CARGO handling at various local airports increased by 32 percent to 8,220.4 tonnes during the quarter ending December last year from 6,195.9 tonnes recorded during the quarter ended in December 2020.

The report by Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) has shown that Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) (Dar es Salaam Zone) accounted for the largest share of cargo handled as during the end of fourth quarter of last year cargo handed was 6,299.6 tonnes from 5,013.7 tonnes respectively.
The Consolidated Zonal Economic report by Natioal Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows northern zone airport accounted for the second largest after handling cargo volume amounted 1,91.4 tonnes as of December last year 406.5 tonnes by December 2020.
Other growth of cargo handling recorded in central zone airport whereby cargo handled during 2021 amounted 267.7 tonnes from 163.2 tonnes respectively.
However, cargo handling to Lake Zone airports went down during the reviewed period to 338.3 tonnes from 399.2 tonnes respectively while those in southern highlands zone also fell to 160.9 tonnes from 184.8 tonnes in 2020.
The TCAA also reported that international flights movement increased to 5,356 during the end of fourth quarter of last year from 3,270 recorded during the end of similar quarter of 2020, which indicates recovery of aviation industry which was badly hit by the impact of Covid 19 pandemic travel restrictions.
Domestic flight movement also gained to 17,811 in 2021 from 14,862 recorded during the the end of comparing quarter while domestic passengers jumped to 500,145 in 2021 from 389,758 recorded in 2020.
According to TCAA report, international passengers increased to 264,882 in 2021 from 135,718 recorded in 2020.
Out of total international passengers’ traffic in 2021, 210,186 passed through the Dar es Salaam Zone airports, 53,696 (mainly JNIA) through northern zone airports (mainly Kilimanjaro) while those I Lake Zone, recorded 296 international passengers.

Oman Airports to develop Kilimanjaro airport in Tanzania

Muscat – Oman Airports signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO) on Monday to develop a VIP passenger terminal in Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Following the agreement, Tanzania will benefit from Oman Airports’ experience in airport management and VIP services.
The MoU was signed by Abdul Nasser Abdullah al Yamani, vice-president, Business Development, Oman Airports, and Christine Mwakatobe of KADCO.
The MoU stipulates that Oman Airports will undertake the development of the General Terminal for VIPs and hangar facility at Kilimanjaro International Airport, development of a five-star hotel for passengers and a business complex/shopping mall in the airport. The MoU has scope for development of other facilities that may be agreed upon mutually between the parties.
‘This partnership will serve in developing the facilities referred to in the text of the MoU to ensure the provision of high-standard services as part of efforts to raise revenues for both the Tanzanian government that owns the airport and Oman Airports,’ a press release said.
