Correction: the factory is in Athi River County

President Uhuru Kenyatta has hailed Mars Incorporated for its Sh7 billion chewing gum factory built by its subsidiary Wrigleys in Athi River.

Once in operation, the factory will produce 7.8 billion pellets of chewing gum annually.

The president, in this regard, reaffirmed his administrations' support for local and international firms investing in local manufacturing.

He said during a meeting with Victoria Mars - board member and immediate former chair of Mass Incorporated, that the development will accelerate the Big Four Pillars for inclusive growth.

The President said the private sector has a pivotal role to play in the countryโ€™s quest to create more jobs for Kenyans and improve Kenyaโ€™s competitiveness in the global economy through a robust manufacturing sector.

Victoria Mars paid the president a courtesy call at State House, Nairobi.

The Wrigleys facility in Kenya, which is set to be opened later this year, is the only one in Africa serving East African countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

Uhuru said his administration will continue to improve the countryโ€™s environment to do business.

He called on the company to take advantage of the recently adopted agreement to establish a continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) to increase its production to serve African countries.

The President also commended the company for its initiative in Mt Elgon where it is supporting 20,000 dairy farmers.

Mars briefed the President on various initiatives undertaken by the company to expand its operations in the region and provide social and economic opportunities for Kenyans.

She cited an entrepreneur program, Maua, which currently has over 700 entrepreneurs.

The president further said the new factory would not only create jobs but also provide opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises through its expanded value chain.

Mars assured the President that Wrigley and its global parent firm Mars Inc. is committed to working with the government and being a part of Kenyaโ€™s increasing presence as a manufacturing hub in Africa.

โ€œYour goal to boost local manufacturing capacity is timely and offers a great opportunity to expand employment and job creation for Kenyans while cementing the countryโ€™s position as a key industrial hub in Africa.โ€

โ€œ Wrigley is keen on growing and developing our business here and contributing to this noble objective,โ€ she said.

She added that Mars was actively supporting many social and economic initiatives to expand employment and business opportunities for Kenyans especially in low-income and rural areas.

Key sectors of engagement include agriculture, through the Livelihoods Fund for Family Farming as well as the Ethical Tea Partnership; working closely with the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA).

Cabinet Secretary for Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, Adan Mohammed and senior government officials were present at the meeting.

The bad new, 75% of raw material used to make chewing gum have to be imported to Kenya.

The good news, 95% raw materials needed to make chewing gum, can be sourced in Tanzania.
๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€ok sir

That means no chewing gum will find its way in Tanzania. We don't sell raw materials n second rule of origin does allow a finished product with 85% of ingredients being imported. Case closed.

The usual habit of CCM and their minions of pulling figures from the as*. The main ingredient in chewing gum is gum base. Which is mostly made of synthetic rubber. Sources of this can be anything from oil by-products to vegetable products. (It's a trade secret).

Either way, there is nothing to be sourced from Tanzania.

Also, Mars Incorporated makes much more than chewing gum. They'll need a lot of milk (I guess from the Mt Elgon dairy farmers) for their chocolates.

Hahahahahaha.
If this was the case, your supermarket shelves would be empty.
You produce nothing. Where Kenya is unable to supply you, China steps in.

Chewing gum? really? Hicho ndicho kitu cha kutusumbua sisi wanaume? hii ingekua habari nzuri sana forum ya watoto

Mars makes more than chewing gum. Ama unadhani Sh7 billion ni kiwanda cha PK pekee yake?
You'll soon be enjoying their sweet chocolate, made right here in Kenya. ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€
Sneakers, Mars, M&M etc.

Gum comes from rubber, we have natural rubber plantation in Zanzibar and mainland is starting to produce. Softener or glycerin comes is alcohols base from plants or animal, no problem there we're second in Africa in livestock keeping. Oil or sugar base sweeteners, all that can be sourced here in verity of agricultural products. Flavor all tropical fruits are found in our mother land. Oh did you mention chocolate, Mbeya region produce one of finest cocoa in Africa.

Bongolala bongowazi.
You think in the year 2018 they are making chewing gum from natural rubber?
Najua kiingereza ni balaa huko, but there's something called synthetic rubber.
All those other ingredients you've listed will be sourced from right here in Kenya. Tanzania has no capacity to be exporting milk to Kenya.
For cocoa, if Tanzania has never supplied Mars with cocoa, they won't start today. Wouldn't be surprised if Mars goes all the way to Ghana for the cocoa.

Your a master of English from Oxford university (roll eyes) you should find out how is that synthetic rubber is made. After that please look at natural gas by products.

You mention you can sourced ingredients in Kenya from what, tea plantation? or miraa? As for cocoa Mr Google will cover all your concern about Tanzania cocoa. Just learn what Tanzanian "organic" cocoa can do to you.

Hahahahaahaa Chewing gum my foot this is soo cheap tafuta toto forum upost hii childish things mybe Miraa Chewing gum coz we can't sell our raw material we need finishing good

The whole point of synthetic rubber is to NOT use natural rubber. Bongolala always coming short on common sense.
Synthetic rubber is made from oil, which if I recall, Kenya has started producing.

You can keep your 'Tanzanian cocoa'. It is not recognized by anyone and will never export to anyone.

Education education education, not every oil can be used to produce everything. American oil isn't Nigerian oil isn't Russian oil or even Saudi Arabian oil, do your research. On the other had you fails to research on natural gas byproducts.

Another zero research, Tanzanian cocoa is selling really well to ORGANIC chocolate producers, popular in US.
Tanzania Changes The Rules For African Cacao

Small stuff. When it comes to cocoa production in the world, Tanzania is not even a footnote. 90% of the world cocoa is produced by 10 countries. Yet you don't even appear in the top 20.
So I can tell you now that you will not be supplying Mars with the cocoa.
Actually, I don't see any raw product that Tanzania will provide the new factory.
