LOOK OUT FOR COMET TODAY JUST AFTER SUNSET NEAR THE WEST HORIZON
From 14 October onwards and for some days after, you can
try to spot the comet ATLAS Tuchinshan in the west horizon soon after sunset as shown on this image for positions on 14-19 October.
So starting from the day when the Moon will hide Saturn on 14 October onwards watch close to the west horizon just above where the Sun will have just set. Look for very bright Venus to the left and the comet will be to its right as shown in the images.
The comet is now becoming visible at sunset after turning around the Sun from its previous position at when it was visible in the east horizon at dawn for some weeks while it was approaching the Sun.
So now it will be visible in the west horizon just after sunset. At this time it now moving away from the Sun.
Comets come from the final edge of the Solar System where there is a spherical shell of material remaining from the gas and dust cloud from which our solar system was formed. So the comet that we see is the material that had collected all those billions of years ago (5 billion years) when our Solar System was formed. So we are seeing a truly unique thing when we look at a comet. Scientifically comets give us information about the material from which our Solar System was formed.
The reason for its long tail is the extremely fine dust particles that were released when its ice was evaporated away by the warmth of sunlight since it has now come close to the Sun.
The tail is formed because the light of the Sun pushes the extremely fine dust particles. This means the tail will now be pointing away from the Sun.
When it was on the other side of the Sun (and visible at dawn), the tail was also pointing away from the sun but the tail was behind the Sun.
But now that it is on the other side of the Sun and moving away from the Sun back to deep space, the dust tail will be in front of the comet.
