As Kenya believes its own hype, the world looks away

The international community is beginning to view us as a spoilt child

In Summary

  • Ethiopia is no longer in civil war and is quickly becoming a better investment opportunity for manufacturers.
  • Tanzania is the new gateway to the DRC and is receiving mammoth investment from both China and America
  • The more we push, the more it appears that our principal interest is to continue with our renowned practice of perpetuating impunity.
  • In Africa, China and Russia are spoilt for even better choices. They will only go so far to help us out.

Ever since the post-election violence of 2007/2008, the word impunity has been used both nationally and internationally in describing what is wrong with Kenya.

In what is popularly known as the Waki Report, the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the violence stated:
“Our view is that the lackadaisical manner in which the government dealt with the Akiwumi report only goes to illustrate that the state was not particularly interested in resolving once and for all the issue of ethnic violence.”

In the report he tabled before the United Nations General Assembly in May 2009, the UN Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions decried impunity in Kenya and observed that nothing had been done regarding the ethnic violence of 1992, 1997, and 2007.

He recommended that the International Criminal Court should take up Kenya’s case noting that “without the special mechanism recommended by the Waki Commission, there is little prospect of accountability”.

This is the background against which Kenya is conducting its diplomatic initiative to have the cases at the ICC terminated.

The significance of this international reputation was clear when Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed was being interviewed a few weeks back by Zeinab Badawi of the British Broadcasting Corporation in the programme, HARDtalk.

The interviewer accused Kenya of trying to use the African Union as a Trojan horse to pursue its international diplomatic initiative to have the three cases dropped. She said though AU’s complaint was that the court was targeting Africans, the request for dropping cases only concerned Kenyans and not other Africans before the ICC.

The issue about the interviewer was not whether one agreed with her but that she was a reflection of how the world out there thinks of us. The international community is beginning to view us as a spoilt child who expects rules to be broken to accommodate its desires.

The reality is that gone are the days when we were the “island of peace” in an unpredictable and violent part of the world. Over time, the world around us has changed, but we are yet to wake up and smell the coffee.

Ethiopia is no longer in civil war and is quickly becoming a better investment opportunity for manufacturers both due to the low price of its electricity and the size of its population, about 90 million people. It is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

Tanzania is no longer socialist and is now the darling of America. Apart from its own vast mineral, oil and gas deposits, Tanzania is the new gateway to the DRC and is receiving mammoth investment from both China and America.

China is building what is being called a “mega port” for Tanzania at Bagamoyo, which is more than 30 times the size of Mombasa, as part of a $10 billion investment package for Tanzania. When completed, it is bound to take away all central Africa business from Mombasa port, which will be left to serve only Kenya and Uganda.

To underpin the importance of Tanzania to China, the Chinese President Xi Jinping travelled to Tanzania in March this year to personally deliver the deal.

President Obama has recently visited the country and launched the “Power Africa” project, a $ 7 billion project to produce 10,000 MW of electricity to sub-Saharan Africa. Kenya was not part of the deal.

In the meantime, our signature project, Lapsset, to connect Lamu to South Sudan is failing to attract investors and, in fact, a new deal is being negotiated by South Sudan and its northern neighbours to take the project upwards connecting the South Sudan to the Red Sea. The new deal is said to be better for South Sudan and there is a real danger that Lapsset may never see the light of day.

Sudan is itself fighting to convince the southern nation that it should continue exporting its crude through the pipeline to Port Sudan.

In the meantime, we are proceeding on the basis that the world cannot do without us. We even have the effrontery to demand that the whole world ignore the international law, yet the more we push, the more it appears that our principal interest is to continue with our renowned practice of perpetuating impunity.

Let us stop comparing ourselves with other countries. The painful truth is that Kenya is not Syria. In the Middle East, Syria is the only foothold for China and Russia. The rest of the countries are either fundamentalist or pro-Western. In Africa, China and Russia are spoilt for even better choices.

They will only go so far to help us out.

As Kenya believes its own hype, the world looks away - Opinion - nation.co.ke

I read this,,,some two days ago,,from the Nation news paper,,Kenya,,,and this is his
own opinion,,from this lawyer,,in Kenya.

So,,it is not from the bible,, the Qur'an,,nor any holy book.

This lawyer,,,has no,,memory.

He does not,,even remember,, where Kenya has come from.

He just woke up,,found a Waki report and its recommendations and
now is criticizing everything Kenya and does not even offer or
sell us ideas of what we should do.

This is the biggest problem, with we nyeusis,,we see wrongs everywhere
but never take the responsibility into our owns hands and try rectify what
we see as,,wrong.

It is not that i hate Wazungus,,,but what i hate is their attitude towards us,
that they will not hesitate to take advantage of our Ushenzi,,,for most of
the times,,,we the Nyeusis are completely,,dumb.

We write so much,,,criticizing everything,,ours so as to please somebody.

That is to please the people in the west.

You complain how dirty is everywhere,,when you contribute the dirt,,yourself.

There is that German Mzungu,,in Mombasa,,who has been sweeping the streets
there,,for free,,when most of us are writing volume and volume of how dirty is
Mombasa while trowing all sorts of rubbish.

Now this so called Nairobi lawyer is not offering any suggestion,,what should
we do,,so as to remain ahead of others????

Should we go and bomb Bagamoyo,,,,go to South Sudan and convince them
that we are a better choice???

Elect Raila Odinga so that Obama can visit Kenya????

Let the British,,French and other falling babylonian,,continue raping us
so as not to let the world not look away from us.

Forget it brother,,,you are so backward and your ideas are for the Kenya
of 1970's.

You are,,either owner of those so many NGO's,,in Kenya,,,or a member,,,
those Mosquitoes who survive on money from those foolish wazungus who
spent their useless money in Africa thinking that they are helping.

What world is he talking about,,when we owe these foolish Mosquitoes from
the west,,10-12 Billion of Dollars as loans.

We pay money,,,year in,,year out,,,of which we don't know how it was
spent.

It started with,,the British in 1960's.

The first grant,,loan or whatever,,,,was given,,to the Kenyatta government,,
the biggest chunk,,,to buy land,,back,,from the departing wazungus from this
country as Kenya gained its so called,,,, independence.

They continued doing so,,investing in Kenya,,,using economic factors to seize
our brains and imprison us.

In turn,,,they contributed some foolish items as aid to us and
make us believe as if,,we cannot do without them.

These so called lawyers and prophet of doom,,,,are in for a very rude
shock.

First,,,we are not going to kneel before your,,useless gods.

Secondly,,,that the greatest resource Kenya has,,,is its people.

Not the natural resources that has put us,,where we have been,,not
the port of Mombasa nor transporting goods to DRC.

It is the people of Kenya are what has made Kenya what is.

If others are waking up,,today,,to build a Bagamoyo which will be
bigger than Mombasa,,,,that is their Shauri and NOT OURS.

We have been doing that for so long and nobody can teach us how
to do it.

We are going to do our things according to our needs and not look at
others so that we can know what to do.

We can even,,,choose,,,to play their game,,,, and build our own bigger
Bagamoyo here,,in Kenya.

But we will not do that,,for the moment,,,for we have projects on line.

We have,,teamed up with Uganda and Rwanda and are in the processes of building
of a railway line from Mombasa to Kigali.

That is more than enough.

With the addition of recent discovery of other natural resources,,plus the
human resource,,,what else do we need.

We are experiencing other new things in Kenya,,,devolution where we
have now 47 counties.

Within no time,,,counties in Kenya will be competing and doing inter
counties businesses,,creating more jobs and innovation.

People are running to Machakos counties with money.

This is the route,,the way of doing things in Kenya and not as that
Old Nairobi lawyer who lives in the past,,,,believing that it is only
Wazungus who makes African survive or that it is only transporting
goods to South Sudan or DRC that will make us,, more prosperous,,
in Kenya.

Let those who has been sleeping or had been in wars,,,do what we
have been doing,,,we in Kenya,,will not complain as they did all along
but we will go up ladder,,, and do other more meaningful things in life
for there are,,thousands and thousands ways of killing a rat and not
only that single formula,,,,eti,,Bagamoyo.

Look at these,,examples,,of TZ,,Ethiopia and S Sudan?????

TZ is yet to come into terms with real life,,,they have,,,to
make a constitution as we made in Kenya,,,,,which will reflect
today's reality,,before building anything else,,,for they may
build it in soft soil and crumble down within,,days,,as we
experienced in Kenya,,in 2007.

We have past that stage now,,,instead of America and Europe
help us in Kenya,,,they want to take us back,,to 2007,,when
the British themselves went Scot free after maiming,,raping
displacing Kenyans,,some fifty years ago,,,but will,,instead
in this age and time,,,finance ICC to take care of atrocities commited
in Kenya and Africa and not talk and not mention what
they,,themselves,,did in Africa.

Politically and economically,,,,they are far far far behind Kenya,
when they have been sleeping on so much natural resources.

TZ is still under CCM,,more than 50 years since independence.

This is what inspires Obama sooooo much,,,that is why he loves TZ
that much.

An island of peace when only god knows what is behind the bars,,,,,in
their prisons.

Ethiopia,,,look at their prisons,,,full of journalists and political detainees and
somebody is telling us how they are fairing better.

Do i need to talk of Uganda and Rwanda,,,,DRC Congo where all sorts
of sins are daily committed by those thugs,,,Americans and Europeans,,
stealing diamonds,,in those areas.

Only Kenya not willing to get naked and be raped as usual by the so
called,,,, the world,,kwani,,,what is world if it is not America and Europe???

We do not want the world,,let it face away from us,,we don't want the British
Americans and the French,,we do not need them,,anymore,,let them go to TZ
and DRC Congo.

We no longer want to be taken,,the way they took us,,,,those foolish
colonizers,,as little children,,,we command respect and short of
that,,,,

Let the world or Kenya collapse,,if it is them who have been holding
this country,,,together,,no one will ever,,threaten us,,for,,,

We are wiser now,,,than ever.

it is amazing no Kenyan over here dare to contribute! where is the Mwathai guy that posts his shallow extracts from his blog about LAPPSET?

Geza,
You want to hear what we think? Wait, we will respond.

Kenya to benefit from Obama's $7b Africa power plan

President Obama has recently visited the country and launched the “Power Africa” project, a $ 7 billion project to produce 10,000 MW of electricity to sub-Saharan Africa. Kenya was not part of the deal.

Very mistaken,,,this so called,,Nairobi lawyer,,, he must have been drinking while
writing this stupid,,,article.

Which school did he go,,,which taught him that Kenya was not in the sub-Sahara???

Kenya to benefit from Obama's $7b Africa power plan: Business and Finance-africareview.com

This guy jammu africa is saying the same thing all kenyans have been saying. especially to their darling neighbors.. (tz and ethiopia)

To me i see many kenyans as bunch of opportunists who are drowning in their own ego.. thinking that they will be ahead of Tanzania 10 years to come..

you elected a criminal. The world thinks you are criminals too...

Poor you.

To me i see many kenyans as bunch of opportunists who are drowning in their own ego.. thinking that they will be ahead of Tanzania 10 years to come..

Poor you.

I was forced to talk,,about the position we in Kenya are,,in comparison
with all our neighbors,,by that lawyers,,,who was making his own assumptions
without,,really,,looking at the facts,,in the ground.

First,,,we have no intention to compete with any one. That is not why we
elected this government,,but what we want is,,,actions,,that is,,rapid
growth.

President Kibaki had the plan,,that by 2017-18,,the generation of electricity
to the grid,,,to have reached 3,000 Megawatts.

The jubilee government's plan is the generation of electricity,,, will reach 5,000
Megawatts in the same period.

Standard Digital News : : Business - Kenya unveils ambitious electricity production plan

'By pushing the country's generation capacity to over 6,500MW, the programme seeks to do
in just 40 months what the country has been unable to achieve in 50 years.

Electricity generators currently have a combined installed capacity of 1,600 megawatts, with
800MW added to the national grid in the last decade
', the Standard.
This one of the government's plans,,if this happens,,it will make a very big impact to the
economy of this country.

Electricity will be cheap,,production will go up and employment also goes up.

This government's plans is like that nice music to our ears.

That 17,000 megawatts will be used to run electric trains.

Making transportation of goods and passenger,,even cheaper.

Counties have also been allocated of what amount of
electricity,,each county will receive.

Growth is going,,to the,,, mashinani,,,to the grassroots,,,
rather than erecting giant projects that will generate huge
amounts of money to be divided by the,,,WAHESHIMIWAS.

This is what we want,,,we do not want white elephants projects
put up by the government in the aim of competing,,,eti,,he he he,
the neighboring countries.

We are not aiming to compete with Uganda,Rwanda South Sudan
and not,,even,,,Tanzania,,,but real co-operation that will help the
common mwanainchi.

Look at those European countries,,,when building that,,Airbus,,, the wing
parts are built by this country,,the Engine and other parts are done by
another designated country and at the end,,,they come up with something
that none of them would not have done by themselves.

This is the rout,,Kenya,Uganda,Rwanda,,,are going,,,,TZ is dragging it's feet,
it wants to safeguard it's own narrow interests,,without thinking of the wider
picture.

It's fears Kenya's domination.

let's call a spade,,a spade and not a spoon.:smile-big:

It is in the competition when others are talking of,,co-operation.

It is in the competition when others are talking of,,co-operation.

you elected a criminal. The world thinks you are criminals too...
Poor you.

The world,,that is the one led by Americans,,British and,,French,,yes they thinks so.

Because,,criminals believes that everyone is a criminal,,like them.

But the other world,,,including the one we are,,in Africa,,,led by AU,,thinks completely
different.

It all depends in which world,,,you live,,or,, you believe,,,in

Very simple.

And,,if we elected a criminal,,,that is our god given right to do so.

There is a saying which goes like,,,one man's meat is another man's,
poison.

And to make it,,even worse,,,,how could 6,000,000 Kenyans be wrong,,, when,,
some,, 10 to 15 useless and foolish bald heads in New York, London and Paris
be right?????

Weee,,hii ni,,Kenya.

We do not want to be,,,,,he he he,,eti,,,their,,,darling and get fu,,cked
up as they did all those,,years.

Uganda was,,yes,,one of their darlings,,, don't know what happened,,,either
they refused to continue,,sleeping with them.

Even,,Rwanda,,,you are their,,,real darling,,,if you put yourself,,in the right
position,,,so that they can,,each take turns,,,to ,,raping you,,while you sing,,

'Eeeeee,,ndiyo,,Bwana kubwa,,,,eeeee,,,,, yes,,you are helping me,,,,,,,,,,,'

What is a criminal,,,to them,,,is an angel to us,,,a criminal to us,,an angel
to them,,,well and good and let the world continue for it all belongs to us
and not,,,,only to these bald headed mosquitoes from the west who rapes
you while quoting verses from the bible or some stupid international
laws cooked in their own foolish kitchens.

If we made any mistake,,,it is us only to face it,,,and i do not know why
people,,wanaumwa na pilipili isio katika midomo,,yao.

But swear one thing,,we are very right,,,and those of,,misleading opposing
opinion,,,,very wrong and very soon,,will find out.

These are the same people,,,who,,in their wildest dreams,, saw Kenyans
manufacturing pangas and all assortment of crude weapons,,,everywhere in
Kenya,,ready for killing each other,,during or after,,,,

2013 general elections.

even the Germans under NAZI said so, "how can over 80 million Germans be so wrong on their hatred towards Jews?"; then what followed after was a perish of 6 million Jews.

It's been said, that when you're on top, enemies that previously disguised themselves as friends will eventually show their true colors. Kenya has nothing to worry about at the moment since it controls the region's economy. Kenya is a resilient country and will eventually rise to the occasion. I can't wait till TZ gets locked out of the EAC.

you'll wait FOREVER

TZ has been the greatest tumor in EAC and development of DRC rwanda uganda and burundi....goodluck in your new found partnership with the new bloc. MR orengo et al had all the incentives under the kibaki regime to implement the akiwumi and ndungu land reports which came as early as before 2003 and diverted them to KKV, maize scandal and other phantom projects..... cord members had their time to bring reform which they failed....
right now they are wasting tax payers money by seeking to give pension and extra cars to raila and kalonzo
......they should now stick to matters ICC and nothing more.... they should let the new government tasked by mwananchi to fulfil their promises....

Tanzania is no longer socialist and is now the darling of America. Apart from its own vast mineral, oil and gas deposits, Tanzania is the new gateway to the DRC and is receiving mammoth investment from both China and America.
hope 10 years afterwords tz will have something to show for the mammoth investments.

the fact that Xi jingping and Obama arrived in TZ is good but that does not mean anything to 125 million EA members. it only means post-cold-war politics is becoming more competitive by china being the latest country to engage
