Azimio La Arusha: Why We Were Dead Wrong!

To some extent it was all about ujamaa villages. In 70s and before that more than 90% of Tanzanians lived in rural areas, and the number of Tanzanians who were relocated were more than 13 million.

Concerning other resources, you should be specific. Otherwise we will be discussing imaginary issues.

Why should I give a country? Where you live typifies what I try to say. Mind you, people are very creative and it doesn’t matter where they live. If you give them some sort of freedom they will produce wonders.

Nyerere had his own vision how Villages should work. However, from the center of his power to rural areas, he created multiple layers of bureaucracy the country had ever seen or experienced. What’s worse, in each layer there was a lack of leadership skills and qualities. So the responsibility for Ujamaa Villages or for that matter Azimio la Arusha failure rests squarely with Nyerere. He had the vision, and he selected who should execute his mission.

Now concerning Ujamaa Villages being part of macroeconomic, I don’t buy it. Only communists in Eastern Europe were methodical. Nyerere and his company in Africa were just populists at best. They didn’t know what they were doing and the types of philosophical challenge they were facing. They didn’t expect capitalism to survive within their own lifetime. But it did.

Communal villages in Soviet Union and China were implemented by force and many people lost their lives. In Russian the number of those who died is more than 20 Million while in China the number is more than 30 Million. So I don’t understand when you say “This was never a schematic vision forcebly impose to people as argued by most modernist ideologies who mix Economics with Freedom and liberty.”

In Tanzania, the implementation of Ujamaa villages could have killed many people. There was huge shortage of food, and without the help of international donors, probably some of us wouldn’t have survived.

Bado mko na Azimio la Arusha? Mleta mada keshaisahau kabisa!

mkuu wamekupiga ban..? kah
