Tanzania’s economy expanded 5.2 percent in 2018, the World Bank said on Thursday, the second major report this year from a multilateral financial institution contradicting rosier government figures.
Tanzania’s finance minister had told parliament last month that growth was 7 percent last year
In a report, the World Bank, which makes its calculations based on state data, also forecast 2019 growth at 5.4 percent - again lower than the government’s estimate of 7.1 percent.
Last year’s growth was affected by a decline in investment, exports and private lending, the report said.

“Data related to consumption, investment and net trade suggest that growth softened in 2018,” it said.
President John Magufuli embarked on an ambitious programme of industrialisation after coming to power in 2015, investing billions of dollars into infrastructure, including a new rail line, reviving the national carrier and a hydropower plant.
But government interventions in mining and agriculture have led to declining investment in east Africa’s third largest economy.
Foreign direct investment has more than halved since 2013, while private sector lending growth plummeted to less than 4 percent in 2018, far below the 20 percent average between 2013-16.
The World Bank report follows an unpublished International Monetary Fund (IMF) report in April that also raised questions over Magufuli’s handling of the economy.
Leaked version
A leaked version of the report, seen by Reuters, accused the government of undermining the economy with “unpredictable and interventionist” policies, saying medium-term growth would be around 4-5 percent, again below official forecasts.
In its report, the World Bank said investment growth was subdued partly because of government struggles to meet spending targets in development projects.

The economy could grow to 6 percent by 2021 “with a modest improvement of the business climate and a pick-up in [foreign direct investment] and other private investment,” the bank said.
Other economic indicators also point to a slowing economy.
The current account deficit widened to 5.2 percent of GDP in the year ending January 2019, up from 3.2 percent a year earlier, the bank said.
The value of exports dropped nearly 4 percent last year, partly because the government banned cashew exports, a major foreign exchange earner, due to low prices.
Standard gauge railway
On the other hand, the construction of the standard gauge railway and expansion of Dar es Salaam port helped drive up the value of imports by 7.8 percent, the World Bank said.
The government should minimise economic risk by improving the business environment and fiscal management, it recommended.

Globally, Tanzania is also vulnerable to weaker demand, tighter financing conditions, and higher international energy prices, it said.

Not sure why kenyans have troubles with tanzania economy but here is my take down: first of all hio sio official document ya world bank hio ni blog ya bussinessdaily ambayo inamilikiwa na mtu wa kenya: nmeangalia kwenye web ya world bank summary kuhusu Tanzania sjaona anywhere kama hio site inavosema https://www.worldbank.org/en/country/tanzania/overview#2 you can check the overview apa: another thing there is a known secret about these reports znazotolewa na IMF na WORLD BANK: most of them arent true, the only true report we can accept is for ourselves to look at our true lives: are we according to how the reports explains??? for example: you as a citizen are you moving same speed as how your country is developing na hizo report? There was a time back kulikua na report inasema the kenyan shilling is over valued nakumbuka it was discussed here and it was the official report ya IMF: but are all these true? are you really the biggest economy in east and central africa in a way some of your citizens die of hunger: thats what magufuli has been fighting for: you can see this when the president of IMF was called at the state house and he brought a different approach to the report: so the only report we have to take into consideration is within our true self, i have been to nairobi alot of times and i cant compare it to Tanzania anyhow: life in Nairobi is a living hell, most people cant afford that life, kwa wale wanaokaaa Arusha understand how many kenyans wamevamia uku arusha: its like kenyans have made arusha there homeplace, not only are the citizens of kenya alone, including Rwanda, Burundi, and zambia: but kenyans wamechukua sehem kubwa sana , if its to explain to you even the cars za kenya zilizopo uku arusha its a whole new thread, i cant explain much but the citizens of kenya understand the real situation of there life there.. isnt wise to have a battle who is better than the other as something to discuss each now and then, i think the citizens should battle on how they should move forward together, i have friends in Nairobi who we work together on a joint venture and that has been the best of us since we started the song of east african's as common, this isnt the right way for the citizens to interact
Your words sounded sensible at first but they are equally as reprehensible as those of your compatriots.
a) Kenya is the biggest economy in the region, even with the hunger of some Kenyans
b)More Kenyans have more disposable income than Tanzanians, you can tell by consumption data and the number of multinational fast food chains opening in Kenya. Combine that with the malls it all points to a growing middle class with money to spend.
c) Kenyans are naturally risk takers that is why even in Liberia you will find a kenyan owning a butchery or farm.
d) On interaction, Tanzania has never been a faithful member of the eac, it all started in 1965 with the fear mongering of Julius Nyerere, to the point that Tanzania single handedly broke the east african community. Tanzanians on this forum do not leave much to be desired either, constantly celebrating anything bad in Kenya including Terror Attacks.I can say ever since i joined this forum, my views on Tanzanians has changed for the worst. Previously i used to think of you guys as polite cultured, not anymore and most Kenyans feel the same way. Tit for tat is a fair game.

The only country that has never been faithfull to the EAC is kenya: if you guys were faithfull its the same people who promoted MT. kilimanjaro is in kenya while you knew it belonged to your fellow EAC, its the same kenyans who had taken the selling title of tanzanite to the world while you knew its from Tz: so who isnt faithfull here?

I disagree with You, WB/IMF are always objective in their data..Tanzania debased GDP for 2018 in the process adding 4bn (or 7% to reach $61bn). Now the base year is 2018. Growth figures after a debasing always dip down especially in developing countries since its now being calculated from a bigger base.
The problem with those who are debating you is that they dont understand economic figures. They think IMF is a media outlet that gives it opinions from thin air. Thats why they celebrate when they see IMF saying their economy is at 88bn and then bash IMF for stating clearly that KSH is 17.5%-30% over valued.
IMF/WB policies are not always good, but their figures are almost always correct.
And for their wrongful projection of Tz economy growing at 4%, that is Just a projection not Fact..IMF projections unfortunately are almost always wrong especially in africa, Remember in the 1980's-90's they projected africa to grow if they adopt liberal market and privitatisation..For the most part, these polices gave birth to more poverty and national resources where siphoned to Europe

Wrong the base year for calculation is 2015. For a person claiming to be conversant with economics you sure are spilling a lot of fallacies. This is an article from February 2019 and it clearly states 2015 because the last time Tanzania rebased its economy is in 2014 not 2018.

Because when we are given recommendations, we implement them. Tanzania has fallen 12 places in the ease of doing business in the last 2 years. Since 2013, FDI inflows have reduced by half, meaning investors have been scared to invest in the country...Reason being... A mentality like yours, that such reports by IMF, WB, AfDB don't mean anything...…If the reports don't matter, why did your President summon the IMF and AfDB leaders in Dar State House? Its to boot lick them to give favourable reports...…..Now you will continue whining and whining, and when the next reports comes, it will be worse than this, simply because it does not mean anything! Bure kabisa
