FOR THE UNION GVT...

Thus, Sheikh Karume also became the minister responsible for Zanzibar Affairs while Kawawa was the minister of defense and national service. We had no Prime Minister then, and being a deputy minister wasn't such a big deal.

Then Nyerere appointed three ministers in his office to deal with economic planning. These guys were Nsilo Swai, Mohammed Abdulrahman Babu and Amir Jamal, a mixture of an African, an Arab and an Indian, respectively.

Following allegations of taking part in the assassination of Karume, Babu had to leave the country in 1978 after a brief imprisonment. He later became a renowned London-based scholar, and in 1995 NCCR-Mageuzi appointed him the running mate for the presidency of Tanzania together with Augustine Mrema.

Mwalimu then appointed Aboud Jumbe as the minister of state in the first vice president's office while Lawi Sijaona and Bhoke Munanka became ministers of state in the second vice president's office. Jumbe later became the Tanzania vice president after the death of Karume in 1972.

The portfolio dealing with agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry went to Said Maswanya while Jeremiah Kasambala took over the portfolio of commerce and cooperatives. Nyerere appointed his buddy, George Kahama, famous as Sir George, the minister for transport and buildings.

Nyerere set apart an important ministry, finance, from economic planning placing Paul Bomani in charge. Oscar Kambona, another of Nyerere's buddies who rejected the socialism idea in 1967, became the minister for foreign affairs. Kambona later escaped to Britain to avoid treason charges, leaving his colleagues in hot soup.

Nyerere appointed Job Lusinde the minister of internal affairs while lands, settlement and water was placed as one portfolio under Tewa Said Tewa.

Abdullah Kassim Hanga, a vibrant politician from Zanzibar, became the minister for industries and mines. Nyerere also appointed Solomon Nkya Eliufoo the minister for education and a British, Dereck Bryceson, the minister for health.

Labor went to Michael Kamaliza while the development and culture portfolio was placed under Sheikh Amri Abeid, the first mayor of Dar es Salaam after Tanganyika got independence in 1961. The famous stadium in Arusha, Sheikh Amri Abeid, is named after him.

Nyerere appointed Austin Shaba to head the portfolio of housing and local government as Hassan Nassoro Moyo became the minister of law. Information and tourism were charged to Idrissa Abdulwakil.
