Taxes are a moral obligation. Both [evasion and some forms of avoidance] can be viewed as immoral as they describe a range of activities that are unfavourable to a government tax system. I was told that you can maximize certain expenses legally to avoid tax ( i.e. reinvesting the same money and deferring tax payment until later on, or combine directors' business trips with vacations ). Evasion is where you hide your profits to pay less tax. The former is legal (forget about morals). But the latter is illegal. You can be sued for that. I am even wondering why we don't have criminal laws that we can use to charge Barricks Directors. It should be an economic sabotage offence..What these guys did is tax evasion and not tax avoidance..Taxes are a moral obligation. Exactly, it's tax evasion! Good "eye opening" information that provides a different point of view for one to ponder on and perhaps get a new sense of the value of it.
My standpoint on tax avoidance-and-evasion is pretty simple to be honest.
By ABG [African Barrick Gold] not paying taxes, and settling in a country where there was very little political will to change that, means that a lot of other companies such as Petra-Williamson diamonds, Shanta Gold Mine, GGM and TanzaniaOne were enjoying growth due to plundering and squandering our mineral resources.
And here is the truth about tax avoidance-and-evasion. "If it was not possible for so many companies to avoid taxes, Tanzania would not have the huge economic problems the country has". It does not benefit anyone besides some of our government officials and the stock holders in London - or at least, it's not really comparable when the difference is as huge as it is.
It's definitely the beginning of a new era, the current government fight against tax avoidance-and-evasion that will ensure a new golden age and shared wealth across the country. Hapa Kazi Tu..

Thank God for this new administration, Tanzanians are starting to get justice. We are poor because they are rich. Deception and cheating is the order of the day. These investors are coming to invest in our country knowing our leaders weakness, ready to bribe and get away with our billions in taxes. Unfair contracts has made impossible to enjoy the return of our natural resources instead it has brought us diseases, our drinking water are being conterminated with chemicals, and yet too poor to maintain our hospitals, on top of that, very Tanzanians have very little to show for so much natural resource we have. The so called investors are trying to avoid to pay tax at any cost. How could a company declare loss in the country where they do business and yet declare profit for their shareholders? Is that not cheating? We are being cheated left right and the leaders we trusted to safeguard our wealth becomes part of cheaters. I hope the company will pay outstanding taxes plus interest and penalty just like is done in western world. Tax avoidance is criminal, a crime against humanity, is to deprive the people of that country to better their lives. Our hopes are growing under President MAGUFULI administration after feeling so hopeless for many years. God bless our country and the people. Yes hapa kazi tu na asiyefanya kazi asile. We must support this government is the administration we are blessed to have.

Well said.Is one of the biggest cause, corruption, unfair contracts and lazyness. Taxes are very important to any country. It maintained our government functions including important service to the people. In China if you avoid tax you could received life in prison or sentenced to death. In America many years in prisons. Only in Tanzania they give you time to pay.
