The entire idea that symmetry is beauty is bs. I mean why can't there be ugly symmetry? Architects design all kinds of unappealing grey monstrosities, with the best of calculated symmetry right down to the nails.

I mean I can understand if Brian Greeene tells me "simmetry is beauty" in mathematics, in the pursuit of a theory of everything or the nuanced permutations of yet un-testable string theory, the abstract form. I get that. But there is such a thing as overblowing that to unrealistic proportions that will render the entire idea with so diminishing returns it will be akin to fashionable quackery psychobabble.

But why should mathematical beauty - more like mathematical harmony- mean anything to someone who love chaos ?

I mean even if you do away with "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and say,admittedly politically incorrectly, that Kate Middleton is the embodiment of beauty and the actress who portrayed "Precious" - for argument's sake- is the embodiment of ugly, what makes one more symmetrical than another to a detectable degree ? For all I know Kate could be less symmetrical than Gabby Sidibe.

And just to erase any racial intonations here, to me, you cannot mke a case that "Precious" is any less symmetrical to a detectable degree than Gabrielle Union or Halle Berry.

Is symmetry only symmetry when it is beautiful? Has ugliness no symmetry?

Let's not dumb down a very complex, subjecive, controversial and personal subject with some bs pseudoscience.
