The Chartered Financial Analyst Society CFAs) East Africa has said that lack of adequate chartered financial analysts in Tanzania has been the major reason the public has been caught unaware with the closure of banks.
This is after the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) closed five banks at the beginning of the year and another one recently.
In view of the fact, Ardhi University assistant lecturer, and also a member of CFA, Ms Upendo Mick, said this during the first CFA meeting in Tanzania aimed at creating awareness about CFA to different stakeholders in the financial sectors.

I do not agree that the banks that failed in Tanzania did so because they lacked financial analysts!! The main cause of the failure of the banks has been mounting NON PERFORMING LOANS!! The business environment in the country has been very harsh to business; the TRA literally forces businesspeople to pay taxes that are not commensurate with their businesses simply to meet their revenue targets, in the process the businesses close down because they cannot pay the taxes and the banks cannot be paid their loans!! The government has also contributed to the closuse of the banks because of its delay in paying its debts and sometimes not paying at all for the services that have been rendered!

The introduction of wanton regulatory requirements by BOT have also contributed to the financial malaise to banks specifically small banks in Tanzania. The charge on operation risk on loans and the hasty introduction of the IFRS 9 accounting standard not to mention the costs involved in stress testing all had a negative impact on the bottom line of the banks, The Bank of Tanzania should always be cautious in implementing international bank regulations applicable to big banks in the developed countries to our local banks which do not even transact internationally! Incidentally, BOT is still enforcing that our banks do the stress test which countries like the U, S .have abandoned after the amendment of the Dodd-Frank legislation!!

It is imperative that the BOT adopts these international banking regulations to suit our local conditions and especially the regulator should deliberately and selectively protect the local community banks against the big banks with external sources of finance. The banking space is not even and only favors the big ones!
