25 years after the world fell in love with Simba and his merry band, one of the most highly anticipated Disney movies of the year, The Lion King, premiered in Los Angeles, US, on Tuesday.

Based on shots taken in the Kenyan savannah, the movie relies heavily on Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI), the same tools that brought classics such as the dragons and direwolves from Game of Thrones to life.

The star-studded remake of one of Disney most enchanting movies, included the likes ofBeyonce and James Earl Jones (who reprised his role as Mufasa).

Other cast members are, Donald Glover (Simba), Seth Rogen (Pumbaa), John Oliver (Zazu), Billy Eichner (Timon) , Alfre Woodard (Sarabi), Shahadi Wright Joseph (Young Nala), JD McCrary (Young Simnba), Florence Kasumba (Shenzi), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Scar), Keegan-Michael Key (Kamari) and Eric André (Azizi).

Disney stated that they felt it necessary to re-introduce the classic tale to a new audience.

PR representative of Asilia Africa, Shariffah Ingosi, disclosed to the Standard that the film would debut in Kenyan theatres early next month.

  • Shariffah was part of the production team that shot some of the Kenyan scenes, and was beaming with pride at the achievement.
“It’s exciting to know The Lion King takes place in Kenya and that Asilia Africa made it happen,” Ingosi remarked.
The movie, which tagged at the heartstrings of an entire generation, is based on the story of the journey of a young cub called Simba, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery, with the help of a few funny and crazy friends (Timon and Pumba).
The live-action remake's official Twitter account tweeted a cast photo Monday.

Lion-spotting is a useful skill, especially in the Serengeti.

You'd think it would be easy, with over 3000 of them roaming the sun-scorched, treeless plains, but it takes a skilled lion-spotter, such as hawk-eyed Joseph, our guide, to distinguish the manes from the swaying grass.

Tanzania is home to 10,000 lions (the world lion population is 25,000) and over a third live in the 14,763km sq Serengeti National Park.

Established in 1929, the park is Tanzania's oldest protected conservation area and is one of the hottest places in the world to see lions and the other Big Five: elephants, rhino, leopards and buffalo.

The park is also the base for Life Lion - a project set up to protect the endangered beasts. More than 1,000 lions in the Serengeti have died since 1993, mostly from diseases caught from domestic dogs.

But what has perhaps propelled the Serengeti into the public consciousness more than anything else is Disney's global hit, The Lion King.

The country's lion population is the reason why, 12 years ago, when Disney started developing the story of Simba, they sent a team of animators to this part of East Africa to absorb the sights, sounds, colours, moods, plains, craters, jungles and sunsets of Tanzania.

Recognising locations from the movie was half the fun. Olduvai Gorge, a 50km long, 90km deep, canyon, where in the film the wildebeest stampede and King Mufasa dies, does exist.

It is, in fact, a highly significant archaeological site where anthropologist Mary Leakey discovered the skull of 'nutcracker man' - a 1.8 million-year-old ape-like skull. There is a small museum worth visiting here.

But sadly there is no Pride Rock - the film's equivalent of the Pope's window at the Vatican where The Lion King looks out over his people and presents young baby Simba to the world.

Because Tanzania is only a nine-hour flight from London and there is only a two-hour time difference, you can realistically go on safari here for a long weekend though I opted for a longer stay.

Most safari operators work out of Arusha and Moshi - a short drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport (there are direct flights from the UK).

Back in the four-wheel drive Joseph, who was driving with his binoculars stuck to his eyes, (for the passengers this was almost as scary as being mauled by a pride of lions) had spotted something.

He was pointing to a kope (a large pile of boulders) less than five metres away where two cubs played while mum rested with one eye trained on us.

Binoculars are a must for a safari - it's worth spending at least £50 on a good pair. And another safari tip is to take as much film as you can fit in your bag, you'll easily snap a whole roll on a lion cub.

Simba means lion in Swahili but if a guide sees a lion in the Serengeti they call it a Sharubu (beard) for fear that if their guests know there is a lion nearby they will spoil the surprise - too much gee-wizzing from Americans can scare the poor loves.

But we were soon to see some animal instinct at its rawest when Joseph heard over his radio (the guides share information on what they have seen) that a lone female was stalking a zebra.

As we arrived she was lying low waiting for the perfect moment to pounce, the Serengeti grass tickling her belly as she stalked her prey, seemingly unaware that up to ten vehicles had gathered to watch the show.

Leaping forward, she soon turned the white stripes of the zebra red with blood. Female lions do the majority of the hunting and unless the prey is too big for the females to bring down alone the male will sit by and watch (typical).

As the sun started to sink over the gold-dipped savannah casting a candy-pink glow over lionland we felt in need of some light relief after our gruesome experience.

We made tracks for the Serengeti Serena Lodge, our luxury watering hole where the gin and tonics flowed in true Out of Africa style and the vibe was decidedly laid back.

'In Tanzania we say Hakuna Matata', said our waiter. 'It means 'no worries'. That's all very well when you're safe from the lions.

The Lion King story was set in Kenya’s Hell’s Gate National Park
The picture below of Fischer's Tower, known as 'Pride Rock' is actually in Hell's Gate

DsrESILXcAA7dP1.jpg

redeemer Ndio hii kitu yenye itakuumiza roho. Soma paragraph ya mwisho.

Hell's Gate National Park lies south of
Lake Naivasha in Kenya , north west of
Nairobi . Hell's Gate National Park is named after a narrow break in the cliffs, once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley. It was established in 1984. A small national park, it is known for its wide variety of wildlife and for its scenery. [2] This includes the Fischer's Tower and Central Tower columns and Hell's Gate Gorge. The national park is also home to three geothermal power stations at Olkaria . The park is equipped with three basic campsites and includes a Maasai Cultural Center, providing education about the Maasai tribe's culture and traditions.
History
Hell's Gate National Park is named after a narrow break in the cliffs, once a tributary of a prehistoric lake that fed early humans in the Rift Valley. [3] It received the name "Hell's Gate" by explorers Fisher and Thomson in 1883. [4]
In the early 1900s, Mount Longonot erupted, and ash can still be felt around Hell's Gate. [4] The comprehensive Olkaria Geothermal Station, the first of its kind in Africa, was established in 1981 and generates geothermal power underneath Hell's Gate from the area's hot springs and geysers. [3] The park was officially established in 1984. [5]
Two more geothermal stations were added after 2000: Olkaria II and
Olkaria III .
Geography
Fischer's Tower
Hell's Gate National Park covers an area of 68.25 square kilometres (26 sq mi), relatively small by African standards. [6] The park is at 1,900 metres (6,200 ft) above sea level. [1] It is within Nakuru County , near Lake Naivasha and approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) from Nairobi . [2] The park is located 14 kilometres (9 mi) after the turnoff from the old Nairobi-Naivasha highway, and has a warm and dry climate. [2] Olkaria and Hobley's, two extinct volcanoes located in the park, can be seen as well as obsidian forms from the cool molten lava. [6] Within Hell's Gate is the Hells Gate Gorge, lined with red cliffs which contain two volcanic plugs: Fischer's Tower and Central Tower. [6] Off of Central Tower is a smaller gorge which extends to the south, with a path that descends into
hot springs that have rocks hot enough to cause burns, and sulfuric water. [7]
Wildlife
There is a wide variety of wildlife in the national park, though many are few in number. [6] Examples of little seen wildlife include lions, leopards, and
cheetahs. [8] However, the park has historically been an important home for the rare lammergeyer vultures. [2] There are over 103 species of birds in the park, including vultures, Verreaux's eagles , augur buzzard, and swifts. [5]
Hyraxes, [7] African buffalo , zebra,
eland, hartebeest , Thomson's gazelle ,
hyena , and baboons are also common. [8] The park is also home to
serval and small numbers of
klipspringer antelope and Chanler's mountain reedbuck. [4]
Tourism
The park is popular due to its close proximity to Nairobi and lowered park fees compared to other National Parks. [6] Hiking, bicycling, motorcycling and even camping are encouraged within the park, [6] one of only two Kenyan national parks where this is allowed. [4] The Daily Nation praised the mountain climbing in Hell's Gate as "thrilling." It also recommended the Joy Adamson's Centre and boating on Lake Naivasha . [9] A Maasai Cultural Center provides education about the Maasai tribe's culture and traditions. [7]
The park is equipped with three basic campsites, camping is safe in the park even though there are no guns or fencing between you and wildlife. [2] There are also several lodges around Naivasha Lake, popular among tourists for watersports, bird and game viewing in private ranches and walks along Crescent Island, Crater Lake, and Mt. Longonot. [4]
The main setting of the 1994 film , The Lion King is heavily modeled after the park, where several lead crew members of the film went to the park to study and gain an appreciation of the environment for the film. [10]
The 2003 film Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The cradle of Life was shot on location in this park.
