Tanzanian actor sees potential in Zambian film industry
By NDANGWA MWITTAH
TANZANIAN actor Hemedy Suleiman, who was in the country to work on a production featuring the likes of Maureen Lilanda, Sulu and Macky II, says the Zambian film industry has the potential to grow beyond expectations.
Hemedy, regarded by many as the East African version of Nigeria's Ramsey Noah, has featured in a number of productions in his home country such as Red Cross, Crazy Love, Matildah and For My Child, among others.
"I haven't had the opportunity to work very much with Zambians on a production but from what I have seen so far, there is indeed very big potential for the industry here to grow very big," he told the Weekend Mail in an interview.
Hemedy was in the country to shoot over 37 of his scenes in the movie ‘Guilty' which is produced by Zambian actress Cassie Kabwita who stars in Love Games as Tamara.
The movie ‘Guilty' talks about honesty, faithfulness and the need not to be too secretive in relationships and marriages.
Other celebrity figures in this star-studded movie are musicians Mwila Musonda (Slap Dee), Ephraim Mutalange and Franciar.
"The moment I read the script, I knew it was the kind of movie that I would star in. It has a perfectly nice story that people can easily relate to," said the actor, who plays the role of Leo in the movie.
Cassie, who spent some time in Tanzania, says once complete the movie will be premiered in Zambia as well as Tanzania.
"We expect to finish production early next year. We expect to premiere it on March 28, 2014 here in Lusaka and the Tanzania premiere will be sometime in April," says Cassie, who plays the role of Vanessa, Leo's wife.
She says the movie is intended to tempt both Southern and Eastern African markets.
"That is why I decided to call on Hemedy to come on board. He is a very big actor in that part of Africa and we thought he could also help market us that end. It is a serious movie and has a very rich cast," she says.
She is optimistic that once completed, the movie will raise the country's profile on the international film scene.
"Already, people are beginning to appreciate the industry. It is no wonder that Love Games and my supporting act in the same series have been nominated for a top award on the continent. So, the future for the Zambian film industry looks really bright," she says.
