Sepp Blatter
is reportedly considering staying on aspresident of FIFA, having received the backing of several federationsin Asia and Africa, according to the Swiss Sunday paper Schweiz am Sonntag.

"A source close to Blatter says that the president is honoured by the demonstrations of support and really is not ruling out staying on in the position", the report said. "It is being said in Blatter's immediate circle that the Asian and African federations want to prevent the 79-year-old from retiring", it went on.

Blatter was re-elected president of world football's governing body on 29th May, but scarcely four days after that, he announced his departure from FIFA amid a new corruption scandal.

Seven top FIFA administrators, among them two vice-presidents, were arrested by the Swiss police on 27th May in Zurich in an operation which originated in an investigation by the US Justice department.

The successor to Blatter, who was first elected in 1998, is expected to be chosen at an extraordinary Congress to be held on a date yet to be announced between December 2015 and February 2016. Until then,Blatter will continue at the helm of FIFA, and it is not yet known who the candidates are to succeed him.
