TANZIA Buriani Abbas Kleist Sykes

Hivi waarabu hawakuwa wakoloni?

Hivi waarabu hawakuwa wakoloni?
Waku...

Hili swali unaweza kulijibu wewe mwenyewe.

Hivyo, ndio nitaendelea kupitia mara moja moja unachoandika kila ninapopata wasaa.

May Day,
Ahsante sana ndugu yangu.

Bagamoyo,

Wewe umekwenda mbali unataka niandike nieleze mikasa niliyokutananayo duniani nikiwa safarini.

Nilipokusoma nikacheka peke yangu kama mwehu nikasema huyu ndugu yangu Bagamoyo kanifanya mimi Sindbad na safari zake saba.

Big Show yeye kakuunga mkono yeye anasema akiniona nimefika barzani tu analeta jamvi anatandika kustawisha gumzo.

Sasa mimi nimeamua kuweka hapa taazia niliyomwandikia mwalimu wangu na sheikh wangu, Sheikh Mohamed Mlamali Adam aliyekuwa kwa wakati fulani Mhariri wa Africa Events.

Kwanini nimechagua taazia hii?
Sijibu.

Someni mtatambua.

On the one hand, definitely.

On the other, he is single-handedly filling a void of historical scholarship in Tanzania, as shambolic and colloquial as he may be. The disastrous dearth of history professionals, commentators and writers is undeniable. We fear to talk and write about our history, not least because it is grounded in massive lies and cover-ups. Such as the exaltation and commemoration of Julius Nyerere and Abedi Karume as saintly godfathers of the nation. In many ways a brazen cover-up of a grotesquely repressive misrule in post-independence mainland and a wantonly bloody epoch following the revolution in the archipelago.

Muhammed Said, therefore, will continue to be the preeminent go-to source of history and mis-history of Tanzania's founding era for many years to come.

My critique is immanent.

My issue is, even if one is to agree with Mohamed Said on his main argument, that orthodox history in Tanzania is distorted by the apparatchik, intelligentsia, literati and cognoscente, scribes and pharisees if you will, he seem to contradict himself by exalting Nyerere disproportionately. Even on an Abbas Sykes orbituary.

There seems to be a spectre of hero worship that permeates Tanzania. Any effort to dismantle this aura is a breath of fresh air to me.

The problem is, this aura has so much pull. It is almost like the event horizon at some supermassive black hole that pulls everything towards a central spacetime vortex, even light (the best and brightest of Mr. Said's caliber), once close enough to the event horizon, cannot escape this pull.

Mohamed Said, despite his apparent scholarship, contribution and daring unorthodox approach, falls in the same pitfalls he is trying to expose, by exalting Nyerere disproportionately, even on an Abbas Sykes orbituary. Sykes is projected as a Nyerere lackey whose life is insignificant after Nyerere's funeral, and only significant in the shadow of Nyerere before Nyerere's demise.

Nyerere gets mentioned more than Sykes, in an Abbas Sykes orbituary. How absurd if not completely disrespectful.

The culture of disproportionate hero worship prevails.

Even in those who claim to dismantle it.

Mr. Said needs to do much better in resolving this cognitive dissonance if he is to be taken seriously by discerning minds.

Ova

My God this guy was writing a dissertation! Would be great to publish such good history and the good thing it’s all in Swahili. RIP Skyes

Muhammed Said will hardly ever have a puncher's chance of being taken seriously. The ferocious cancer of religious bigotry that has been eating at him stands in the way, and seemingly will never go into remission.

He has relentlessly lamented that Julius Nyerere subjugated and suffocated Muslim advancement. A recklessly preposterous charge against a devoutly Catholic president who expropriated Christian schools so as to allow children of all backgrounds to attend; A christian president who permanently severed all ties with Israel in vehement repudiation of what he saw as repression of Palestine Muslims; A Christian president whose single most trusted lieutenant throughout his entire time at the helm was Rashid Kawawa, a Muslim; A Christian president who handed over the country to a Ally Mwinyi, a mediocre Muslim politician he pulled out of a hole in the wall. As such, he bypassed an endless list of tried and trusted christian politicians including Joseph Warioba, Cleopa Msuya, David Musuguri, Benjamin Mkapa, Pius Msekwa, and Jackson Makwetta and countless others.

Throughout the course of history in post colonial Africa, Julius Nyerere has been unanimously credited for cobbling up a nation of fiercely unified people from a vast diversity of tribal-religious backgrounds. Such a rare example in a continent defined by civil strife, unending wars, death and disaster. Muhammed Said or any commentator who tries to upend that self-evident history will largely be ignored by serious observers of Tanzanian history.
