Burkina Faso has launched its first 100% homemade electric vehicle, ITAOUA, produced at a cutting-edge plant in Ouaga 2000, a well-known residential district in Burkina Faso, with Burkinabe engineers leading the design and manufacturing processes.
The ITAOUA electric car is a game-changer, boasting an impressive range of 330 kilometres on a single charge of 30 minutes. This remarkable efficiency positions the ITAOUA as a competitive player in the electric mobility landscape.
It also marks a significant milestone in the country’s automotive industry and showcases its potential in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market. The homemade approach not only empowers local professionals but also enhances the country’s image in technology and production.
The launch of the ITAOUA electric car coincides with optimistic forecasts for Africa’s electric vehicle market. Even though the US, Europe, and China will account for 95% of worldwide EV sales in 2023, a number of African nations are making significant progress in EV adoption.

According to Mordor Intelligence, the electric vehicle (EV) industry in Africa is expected to grow rapidly, reaching a projected $15.8 billion in 2024 and $25.4 billion by 2029. Recently, Botswana also unveiled its first locally built electric cars in Gaborone, in a major step in the nation’s shift to sustainable mobility.
It was produced out of a partnership between two Chinese carmakers and the Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI).
Other African countries with significant EV adoption rates include South Africa, Morocco, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Ghana, Rwanda, Egypt, Ethiopia, Benin, etc., highlighting the increasing demand for electric vehicles across the continent.
