- China had reported at least 137 new cases of COVID-19 in the past six days and this has compelled the country to enforce new measures to prevent another full-blown crisis
- Travell into and out of Beijing both by air and by train has been restricted with residents being advised to stay at home
- China had resumed normalcy after it declared it had put the disease under control after battling it for about three months
Airports in Chinese capital Beijing have cancelled about 1,200 flights and ordered closure of schools as the country raced to contain a new wave of COVID-19 infections.
Authorities took the fresh measures which also included shutting down of the Xinfadi fresh produce market after some 31 people tested positive for the virus on Wednesday, June 17.
The new cases were reported in China weeks after the country declared it had put the virus under control and ordered resumption of normal operations.
Over the past six days, the country which is the global epicentre of the virus had reported 137 cases of the disease.
The Xinfadi market which was shut alongside 10 others, was been linked to the new flare-up and fear is rife more cases may arise from it since over 200,000 people had visited the business centre since May 30.
Other measures the city had installed to contain the disease included the banning of sporting activities, suspension of interprovincial tours and locking down of over 30 residential estates in Beijing.
The first case of the disease was reported in China in December 2019. Health agencies believe the disease broke out at an animal market in Wuhan.
As of Wednesday, June 17, China had recorded 83,265 cases of the disease out of which 4,634 were deaths and 78,379 recoveries.
