Malaba, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Uganda Railways Corporation-URC has received 4 fully refurbished locomotives from Grindrod Rail, South Africa as part of its efforts to revamp railway transport and reduce pressure on the road.

The locomotives have a haulage capacity of between 750 to 1500 tons and can last between 35 to 40 years depending on adherence to the recommended maintenance practices. They have an axle load of 18 tons.

While receiving the locomotives the State Minister for Work, Musa Francis Ecweru, says that the government will not allow URC to die.

“Though it suffered the issue of concessions with Rift Valley railways and they are still in court, this institution should not suffer the consequences of Uganda airlines,” he said.

He says that the government will support the vision of URC to reduce the burden on the road and damage caused by heavy trucks.


David Musiime the Senior Commercial Officer in Charge of Operations URC, said the four locomotives are part of the 5 they were expecting, adding that the remaining one will arrive next week.

The locomotives will be hauling both imports and exports and will be added to support the available rail cargo to and from Kampala.

Shirika la Reli Tanzania – TRC linatarajia kuweka jiwe la msingi la ujenzi wa Reli ya kisasa - SGR kipande cha Makutupora – Tabora (KM 371) na Tabora – Isaka (KM 162), hivi karibuni ikiwa ni utekelezaji wa ahadi ya Rais wa Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania Mhe. Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Ujenzi wa SGR Makutupora hadi Isaka, ni muendelezo wa awamu ya kwanza ya ujenzi wa Reli ya Kisasa kutoka Dar es salaam hadi Mwanza yenye urefu wa Kilomita 1219, ambapo mpaka sasa utekelezaji wa awamu hiyo unafanyika katika vipande vitatu vya Dar es Salaam – Morogoro, Morogoro – Makutupora na Mwanza – Isaka ikiwa ni jumla ya Kilomita 1063 za njia kuu na njia za kupishania.

Akizungumza katika ofisi ya mkuu wa Mkoa wa Tabora wakati wa ziara ya Bodi ya Wakurugenzi ya Shirika la Reli Tanzania, Mkurugenzi mkuu wa TRC ndugu Masanja Kadogosa ameeleza kuwa taratibu za kuanza kwa utekelezaji wa mradi, Makutupora hadi Isaka zinaendelea vizuri, huku zikitarajiwa kukamilika hivi karibuni na ujenzi kuanza.

Kadogosa ameongeza kuwa “katika uendeshaji wa Reli, Tabora ni sehemu muhimu, treni zinazoenda Mpanda, Mwanza, Kigoma lazima zote zipite hapa kwahiyo ni eneo ambalo wanaliangalia sana.

Kadogosa aliongeza kuwa "Katika ujenzi wa Reli ya Kisasa, tutajitahidi kupita maeneo ya pembeni ya miji ili nyumba nyingi zisibomolewe, hapa Tabora Tutakuwa na Karakana na Stesheni kubwa”.

Aidha, kwa upande wake Mkuu wa Mkoa wa Tabora Balozi. Dkt. Batilda Buriani ameeleza kuwa huduma za reli zimekuwa chachu ya maendeleo ya wanatabora kwa miaka mingi na Kwamba wanatabora wako tayari na wana shauku kubwa ya kushuhudia kuanza rasmi kwa ujenzi wa vipande vya reli ya kisasa vya Makutupora – Tabora na Tabora - Isaka.

“Tuna imani kuwa kuanza kwa vipande hivi viwili vya mradi wa Ujenzi wa SGR, kutasisimua pia maeneo mengine katika mkoa wetu, kwahiyo niwahakikishie usalama na kuwa tutahakikisha hakuna hujuma zozote dhidi ya miundombinu hii inayojengwa kwa gharama kubwa” aliongeza Balozi. Dkt. Buriani.

Kwa upande Mwingine Mwenyekiti wa Bodi ya Wakurugenzi ya Shirika la Reli Tanzania, Prof. John Kondoro amemshukuru Mkuu wa Mkoa wa Tabora kufuatia ushirikiano wake kwa TRC na kwa kuhakikisha ulinzi na usalama wa miundombinu ya reli, aidha Prof. Kondoro ameahidi kuwa Shirika litaendelea kuhakikisha huduma nzuri za Reli na kufanyia kazi changamoto mbalimbali kwa maslahi ya watanzania.

Bodi ya Wakurugenzi ya Shirika la Reli Tanzania ipo katika ziara ya Siku tatu mkoani Tabora hadi Mwanza Kukagua miundombinu ya reli pamoja na kipande cha tano cha Mradi wa Ujenzi wa Reli ya Kisasa Mwanza – Isaka ambao umefikia 1% ya utekelezaji.
