TRC to beef up northern route with 40 coaches
THE government is set to procure 40 new coaches to improve the carriage of passengers along the recently launched train route from Dar es Salaam to northern zone regions.

This follows an increased number of passengers using the services from an estimated 700 people to 900 per trip, on the basis of Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) affirmations.

The Minister for Works, Transport and Communications, Isack Kamwelwe said this on Saturday when he spoke to passengers aboard an additional train carrying 900 passengers from Dar es Salaam to Moshi in Kilimanjaro region. He said the new coaches will also see TRC taking the train service to Arusha city.

“We have added the passenger wagons due to a growing demand from people travelling to northern zone regions for holidays. We have already ordered new coaches to facilitate train services in the new train route,” he said.

The minister expressed surprise at the rapid rise in passenger numbers for rail transport, pledging that the government will continue to improve rail transport after it was suspended nearly a quarter century back.

The Dar es Salaam-Moshi route has so far transported 6,300 passengers since it resumed services early this month, he stated.

Earlier, a passenger, Honest Shayo urged the TRC management to increase the number of passenger wagons, claiming that there are many people who have failed to travel due to the limited number of coaches.

Shayo also suggested that the management improves ticketing services to cut on unnecessary queues noticed at present.

A trial trip for new train route was conducted on December 1st carrying TRC workers and ministry officials inspecting the line and the trains, before starting to carry passengers after completion of repair work on portions of the railway damaged by rainfall.

The train started service with eight-passenger coaches with ability to transport 700 passengers.

In announcements on the social media, TRC said train fares to Moshi would be 39,100/- for the second class sleeping coach, 23,500/- for second class sitting coach and 16,500/- for third class coaches.

Fares to Korogwe are set at 25,400/- for the second class sleeping coach, 15,300/- for second class sitting coach and 10,000/- for third class space.

The government in Dar es Salaam has used a total of US$1 billion of the US$2 billion budget for the Tanzania SGR project otherwise known us the Dar es Salaam-Morogoro-Dodoma-Singida Standard Gauge Railway project. Director-General of the Tanzania Railways Corporation, Mr Masanja Kadogosa said at a media briefing, that they have achieved a lot under the President’s, John Magufuli, leadership over the past four years. He expects that by April next year, the first section of the SGR project from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro will have been finalised because they have already accomplished 72 per cent and have finished over 22 per cent of the Dodoma-Singida section.

Most of the groundworks for the multi-billion dollar Tanzania SGR project have been completed such as the electrifications, calverting, earthwork and bridges by over 80 per cent.

Problems facing the project
Previously, they had failed to meet the November deadline for the first phase of the 300km-long SGR railway from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro due to the short rains slowed laying of the tracks on concrete sleepers along the line in November. The rains also paralysed drilling works at a hill where a tunnel needs to pass through as well as the building of bridges, which have to be constructed in dry weather.

The contractors for the project are, Turkish firm Yapi Merkezi in partnership with Portuguese firm Mota-Engil Africa who have completed a stretch of 210 kilometres and are finalising works on the main stations.

This first phase has six main stations at Dar es Salaam, Pugu, Soga, Ruvu, Ngerengere and finally Morogoro. The Dar es Salaam and Morogoro stations will be the biggest.

Overall, Tanzania SGR project will cover 1,457kms from Dar es Salaam to the shores of Lake Victoria and will cost $7.5 billion over the next five years. The Tanzania Railways Corporation plans to procure 1,430 cargo wagons and 20 locomotives for the line that will be serving the neighbouring countries of Uganda, Zambia, DR Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.

Siku mkianzisha SGR yenu nitakua nakuuliza maswali ya kipuzi kama hayo unayoshinda ukiniuliza on our 1 day old new SGR route

Siyo ya upuuzi u have been transporting cargo for 2 years now! I wonder how u don't see the logic behind my question!
The project for SGR phase 2A is a project with its own feasibility stud, financing, contracting and operationalization ...etc Just because Nairobi ICD is full of gantry cranes does not mean Naivasha ICD should be 100% operational on its first day..... And even if it was 100% equipped it does not mean that all businesses taking cargo beyond Naivasha will shift to using Naivasha ICD immediately.

Its like if you launch Bagamoyo port today and then I start telling you that since you have been operating Dar port for the last 55 years , why is your new bagamoyo port empty? where are the trucks to take the cargo, why is there only one ship at the port... etc

The rail extension into the port (first mile) has RMGs(rail mounted gantry cranes) the marshalling yard same, Nairobi icd likewise. With the pictures you've posted, I've tried in vain kulocate rail yeyote hapo naivasha yaku mount that crane structure.. HAKUNA..Question, are we going for RTGs and if so why the exemption or there Will be no cranes all together?
