Many people are mislead when they look at CRDB PLC from outside. It is a political financial institution. It has got a number of scandals and that is why a lot of government's fraudulent transactions pass through CRDB,i.e Richmond, EPA just to mention a few.
One of the principle of good lending is that "you must lend the right amount". If a customer has got a contract of say Tshs 200 million and is applying for a facility of Tshs 200 million, do not give him Tshs 50 million. You are wasting his time and causing business loss because he will fail to allocate it in his contract. What can be done to spend Tshs 50 ml in a project of Tshs 200 ml?
A good banker will approve Tshs 200 ml but will enter into a triplicate contract between you, the contract owner, and the bank.In that contract, it will be stipulated that every payment from the contract owner should pass through your account in that bank, so that they deduct their installments. So you cannot run away with their money.
But what i know is that CRDB does not have adequate cash, they always have liquidity problems. And i pressume that the source of their illiquidity stems from their tendency of massaging their profit figures. They declare profit while their interbranch accounts are not balancing. Interbranch accounts should mirror one another, but for CRDB that is not the case. So when these accounts are not balancing it means there are so many fictitiois transactions dumped there which need to find their way to P & L a/c.
I aslo know a family whose house was mistakenly sold by CRDB after some gangstars had used counterfeit documents and claimed that house to be their collateral and got a loan from crdb by colluding with some employees in 2002. Up to this moment, that family is still strungling in courts to get their house back.
One contributor has mentioned about a maturing fixed deposit account whose funds were transferred to a suspense account. What is a suspense? It is an account where accountants post figure temporarily while looking for its origin. It does not attract any penalty because you do not know what that figure relates to. But a good software will automatically return that money into your savings account because the savings account and FDR are linked together. I am saddened by that daytime theft.
Guys i have a lot to tell about CRDB and many banks in our country but this is enough for today. May be one day i will write an article on how we are being robbed by our banks in Tanzania and BoT being a teethless watchdog
