Carlos Sainz has admitted he needs a miracle after a nightmare day in the dunes handed control of the Dakar Rally to Nasser Al-Attiyah.

The two main rivals for the overall title only finished fourth and fifth on stage 10 from Copiapo (Chile) to Chilecito (Argentina) but Sainz lost 9:17 on the Qatari.

The defending champion is now 12:37 behind his Volkswagen team-mate in the overall standings.

" If Nasser doesn't make a mistake, it's over," conceded Sainz who had a puncture and gearbox problems during the 862km (with 176km special) trek.

The stage was won South African Giniel de Villiers (Volkswagen) ahead of Poland's Krzysztof Holowczyc (BMW) and French driver Stéphane Peterhansel (BMW).

Nasser Al-Attiyah won the 11th stage of the Dakar Rally to give himself a commanding lead in the overall standings.

Carlos Sainz, his team-mate and fiercest rival, was floored when his right-front suspension broke and lost more than an hour on the route between Chilecito and San Juan.

Sainz had said after disappointment on the previous day's stage that he would need a miracle to contend - but the mechanical problems killed off his challenge.

Al-Attiyah came home 73 seconds ahead of Stephane Peterhansel, while Sainz trailed in, finishing 14th and dropping a place to third in the overall standings behind fellow Volkswagen driver Giniel De Villiers.

Qatari driver Al-Attiyah has a lead of 51 minutes and 49 seconds going into the final stages of the rally, which concludes on Sunday.

Carlos Sainz, who slipped out of contention after problems during the final week, did at least manage to win the final two stages of the race.
The leading three are all members of the Volkswagen team.

"It means a lot to win the Dakar, for me, for my people, my country and my team," said Al-Attiyah.

"It is a great victory. It's very difficult to explain what is happening in my head. But it's very nice .

"We showed we had the strongest team in the world. This is the greatest moment of my sporting career. It was a dream to win the Dakar. I think after this win everyone will know where Qatar is."

"You have to be focused, I concentrated on my riding style. It was the only way to get the win," he said after the race.

"It was very difficult, at no time has it been possible to relax. When you finished a tough day, the next was even harder.
"We know that the Dakar is very hard but this year it was especially hard.

"Now I'll rest and think about the future because the truth is that when you are in this race, with all the constant tension, there is not a moment to think about something else."

Dakar Rally 2012: Route
As the condor (rather than the crow) flies, almost 5,000 kilometres separate Mar del Plata from Lima. In 2012, the Dakar will be staging a pan-American adventure of more than 9,000 kilometres in total. Unlike previous year’s loops, the route will transport the rally from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to those of the Pacific, enabling its competitors to discover new lands and another aspect of South America.

The scale of this challenge has also led to a change in the race’s format, which will include 14 days of racing in 2012. Constantly guided by the Andes Mountain range, the drivers and riders will be crossing the Atacama, and will experience in particular the diversity of the dunes as they head into Peru.

Organisers of the Dakar Rally say they hope to bring the event back to Africa by 2012.
Amaury Sports Organization owner Patrice Clerc said that the race would return when security was not an issue.

"We're totally dependent on the geopolitical situation," he said. "I don't know if it will be permissible for us to return by 2011 or 2012."

The 2008 race was cancelled 24 hours before the start in February because of security concerns.

Al-Qaida-linked militants killed a family of French tourists in Mauritania on 24 December, where eight of the 15 stages were set to be staged.

The 2009 event will be run from 3-18 January in Argentina and Chile, the first time in the race's 30-year history it will not run its traditional route.
