We have been told many times that Dar BRT is a success story. But is that really the case? According to people who actually use it, the BRT is a failure that requires complete overhaul.

The buses and stations are crowded more than an Indian train station. Travellers are worried of contracting TB.
The waiting times are extraordinarily long. Paper ticketing no longer works.

As Nairobi prepares to launch its own brt on several corridors, how can we prevent the mistakes of Dar?

If you guys learn from our mistakes and address them on your BRT, it will be so great, and im sure we will learn from you and correct our issues.

But to be honest, I'm afraid if you will take your time and learn from our mistakes.

And that is what I'm seeing you are about to do.

Mm nadhani ujinga ulio andika ukawape wakenya.....kwanza izo hadha zinazo onekana siyo Tz tu hata first world wana experience situation kama hii hasa peak hours ....unazungu mzia mji wenye wakazi 5+ millions na huu ndio unaonekana kuwa usafir waharaka na wabei nafuu kwa upande wa sehem kama kimara, Ubungo,morroco kuja katikati ya mji unategemea nini kama siyo kusanyiko kubwa kwenye vituo? Kwa sasa Dar inaenda next level inahitaj njia nyingi zaidi za usafiri mfano trains na kuboresha mwendo kasi kwakuongeza mabasi mengi zaidi.......kama treni ya Pugu tu kwa data za TRC imebeba abiria milion 5 kwa mwaka , unategemea nini kwa mwendo kasi? Hii project imefanikiwa kupitiliza mpka sasa inazidiwa kuna haja ya kutatua kero zilizopo na nimeona nyingi wamejitaid kuziondoa

Hiyo BRT ni mradi ulioangukia pua, mamia ya Watanzania wengi huomba zirejeshwe daladala za kawaida, niliwahi kujaribu kuitumia mara kadhaa ila kila nikikata tiketi najikuta nashuka nje ya kituo na kwenda kutafuta usafiri mwingine. Tatizo la hawa watu walivyolemazwa na ujamaa, huwa hawaambiliki.

Exposure yao ndiyo tatizo. Watu huku tunapanda subways tukiwa nyomi. Hatuogopi kolona wala nini.
 
I was hoping hii ripoti will focus on alot of issues, the only thing naona hapa ni watu tu kuhojiwa, very shallow reporting.

Nairobi mass commuter system is better thought out than what Tanzania has or will do in dar es salaam in future.
i) Nairobi realized having a BRT without a mass commuter rail will result in bottlenecks and chaos as seen in Dar .
ii) Nairobi prioritized revamping and extending the Nairobi commuter rail to carry 4 million passengers in phase 1.
iii) BRT will not be the main transport system in Nairobi instead it will complement the Nairobi commuter rail until all five phases of Nairobi commuter rail are completed then BRT system will be phased out and the high capacity BRT buses redeployed to serve inner routes from train stations.
iv) Nairobi's BRT system will be more like Bogota than Dar.
v) Nairobi realized citizens need options and choices, especially private vehicle owners who might not want to use BRT or Commuter Rail, that is why Nairobi is a beehive of road construction and expansion in all corners of the city.

Also average transport cost on the Nairobi commuter rail costs between kshs 30 - kshs 60 to transport people as far as 50 km to and from Nairobi CBD. Compare that with Tzshs 1,400 or about Kes 70 for a two way commute on a 21 km line i.e. BRT system fares tend to be more expensive than commuter rail. This was the cause of a violent riot in Bogota.
Nairobi commuter rail phase 1 will use pre-existing infrastructure and carry more people over longer distances, at higher speed and at a cheaper price than BRT which require new infrastructure , travels at an average of 24 km/h and is about 50% more expensive than a commuter rail ticket.
