1, 200 x 365 = 438, 000 teus p.a
438, 000 teus x 20 t = 8, 760, 000 million tonnes p.a
8.76million tonnes pa is almost equal to the 40% of 22million calculation I did in the previous post... which is approximately the same figure David ndii mentions as the design capacity of he SGR (which is not)
So do you want to tell me that the SGR a project build to last beyond 70 years, will have reached its full capacity on the first year of operations? I remember one time David ndii claimed the SGR will never reach full capacity... atleast he made sense then...
this 8.8 million tonnes was just the target of the first few years of operation, even the KR MD said that when they achieve the 1, 200 teus per day next year but one they will be targeting 2000 teus per day.. and then 3000 teus and so on....
I mean we ordered 43 freight locomotives!!!!! once we achieve 1, 200 teus per day, tuna switch to double stacked wagons ambazo zinabeba doeble the cargo.....
hata kama tunatumia double headed system for each freight train.... thats still atleast 22 freight train servives....
Kenyan standard gauge locomotives unveiled
The company is supplying a total of 56 locomotives. There will be 43 DF8B locomotives for use on freight trains, five DF11 locomotives for passenger trains and eight DF7G shunting locomotives. They will have 16V280ZJA diesel engines.
Kenya Railways Corp reports that civil works for the Mombasa to Nairobi line are now substantially complete, with commissioning planned for June 2017.
--------
in conclusion, Design capacity is 22 million tonnes, But we can only realistically achieve only 8. million in the first few years of operation. ... by the time we can reach 22 million it will be like 10 years from now when Mombasa port will be handling like 50 million tonnes p.a..... In my opinionn, that is when we should electrify the rail to increase capacity.
Rember that World bank report that said SGR projects in east africa were not necessary because of lack of more cargo? If you all heard carfully gone through it you would have all understood and wouldn't have needed david ndii's opinion to think for yourself
