FORMER Prime Minister Raila Odinga is putting up a Sh1 billion hill-side palatial residence in Riat Kisumu. Construction of the the palatial, almost stately 74 roomed residence begun four years ago and could be completed before the end of the year or sometimes next year.

The home is crested in Kanyakwar, Riat Hills overlooking Kisumu International Airport. It affords the former PM a near-aerial view of Kisumu City, the base of his political power.

"At some point, the PM was under pressure from family members to convert it into a hotel facility but he stuck his ground on the home idea. His will has prevailed to date," a source close to Raila said yesterday.

The residence has close to 10 bedrooms- including Raila's master bedroom all upstairs. It has four expansive kitchens, two main conference rooms, two small conference rooms and many offices. The main contractor is said to be a foreigner who subcontracted local contractors.

Currently, the contractor is doing final touches on the facility and at the same time doing landscaping outside. Other sources said the construction is behind schedule as it was intended to be finished last year.

Last year, Raila lost the presidential election for the third time. He lost in the first round to President Uhuru Kenyatta. He moved to the Supreme Court but the court upheld Uhuru's victory. He has given clear indications that he will be on the ballot in 2017. If he loses again he will most likely retire from politics. He will then have a choice to either retire in his Nairobi's Karen home or to his new palatial home.

If he had won last year's election, the home would have been his mini-State House. It dwarfs the Karen home of former minister Raphael Tuju and rivals Deputy President William Ruto's official residence in Karen in expanse and grandeur. Raila's home stands on six acre piece of prime land."He broke the ground at the site himself when he was the PM.

It was a low-key occasion," a neighbors told the Star. Raila's real home is in Bondo. This is the home he built during the short interlude between his 1988 release from prison. It is the traditional home, the one his late father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga identified and blessed.

In his "The flame of freedom" biography launched last year, he described how he broke the ground for his Bondo home. Jaramogi had a home fondly known as "Kang'o ka Jaramogi" in Bondo. This is where pre and post independence politics were brewed and shaped.

Raila was also partly raised in Kang'o ka Jaramogi. It was in Kang'o ka Jaramogi where he was put under house arrest for years by founding President Jomo Kenyatta. It is in Kang'o ka Jaramogi where Jaramogi was buried when he passed on in 1994. A mausoleum was thereafter built on his grave. Raila is said to have another house in the Coastal town of Mombasa.

Good for him! But for 12 million US dollars you would think you can get something a lot better looking than that pile of yellow concrete and windows. If you are going to drop that kind of money on a house might as well get yourself a world class architect, it's not like you can't afford it or something.

Would have expected a lot more with $12m budget for a house...but again thats how poor people (yes poor people) spend our money!!

If he loses again he will most likely retire from politics.

Raila should enjoy his life quietly na awache kujipatia stress,,,bure.

If i had that kind of money i would not waste it that way.

Spending money on houses that looks like colleges.

If i were him,,,i would give up politics,,,,enjoy the God or Moi given
wealth well,,,buy an Island in Kenya,,,,,put up a real house and not a
college like thing,,,buy a couple of small and big boats,, helicopter
and a jet,,then enjoy this short stay in this planet,,peacefully.

He does not know that he is one of the luckiest homo sapiens
ever in Kenya,,that a special office had to be created for him
in the government,,something that has never and will never
happen.

Thanks to his foreign friends.

Kisumu, Kenya: Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will unveil a multimillion-shilling building to house his foundation's headquarters by the end of this year.

The grand project that is underway in Kisumu County will host two non-profit organisations to aid the less fortunate in society. The structure that is being built on a hill facing Lake Victoria will be home to the Raila Odinga Foundation, an institution modeled along those established by former heads of states or high level leaders after leaving office to pursue their legacies.

It will also host the Green Outreach Foundation Africa headquarters.
Raila's spokesman, Mr Dennis Onyango on Sunday said the two foundations are currently operating out of smaller offices in Nairobi.

"Apart from hosting the Raila Odinga Foundation and Green Outreach, the building coming up in Kisumu will upon completion also provide conference, media, recreational and office facilities for hire and rental by the public," he said.

For those seeking information covering Raila's timeline years in political life, Onyango said the palatial building would have a library and archive. The spokesman dismissed claims that the building began nearly two years ago, was a home.

The Raila Foundation was launched after lengthy studies of similar ones, including the Julius Nyerere Foundation, John Kufuor Foundation, KY Amaoko's African Center for Economic Transformation, Clinton Foundation, Jimmy Carter Foundation and Tony Blair's that mainly mentors underprivileged children in the society. It has been in operation since 2006.

Following reports in a section of the media that the building was his residential home, the compound is now under tight security, with journalists being turned away.

Raila has a house in his ancestral home in Sakwa, Bondo District and another in Nairobi's Karen area.

On Sunday, Onyango said the foundation is rooted in Odinga's Pan-African agenda through which he hopes to instill confidence in Africa's economic prospects, and arouse stronger investor interest in the continent.

They deny that the house did not cost a billion shs but at the same time,,
they do not say the real cost of the building,,,according to them.

Though Raila Odinga has the right to spend his money the way he wants,,,
but feel that these politicians do invest their,,'easily gotten' money,,
politically:biggrin:,,in the wrong place.

There is this man,,still referred as Nyandarua MP though he was killed in
the 70's,,, mr JM Kariuki,,,the most popular politician ever in this country,
a man who was very rich then,,,,who identified himself with the poor.

He was eliminated for he was stealing all the limelight,,,he was becoming
almost like a Savior,,everybody was seeking his help,,,he was sharing
his wealth with every one and ,,,,,from all tribes.

He gave real money to start small businesses,, he had several offices
in big towns where people could access his help.

If there was any problem in the University,,,even the financial one,,
for those student from poor families,,he would drive there and settle
everything and he never became poor for this.

So he became a savior without even occupying a big office.

Nor did he want to become the president of this country
for there was no indication of this from him.

He faced a very painful death. His body was disfigured with no
eyes,,nose cut out,,no teeth,,,,this is what i call a martyr.

As one musician put it then,,that he was killed for being good
to every one.

The musician was,,briefly,, detained.

Uhuru Kenyatta is the president,,he got what he wanted,,,the judgement
day will be in 2018,,,him showing us what he has been doing for the five
years he was the head of state.

But here i'm speaking about Raila odinga,,,one who has been fighting
to lead this country.

Raila Odinga is not innovative,,,,he does not want to work hard and
reap the benefit of it,,,he just want to rely on some fake 'popularism'.

This is very wrong,,,you do not do what others are doing and expect
to make an impact.

Furthermore,,,these are retired leaders and what we understand is
that Raila Odinga has not yet,,retired from politics,,he has said it
that he will be running for the presidency,,,next time.

He is in a state of confusion,,,it looks as if nobody is advising him the
right way,,or most likely as it has been said,,,that he never listen to
anybody.

If he can listen to me,,,i would tell him that small things makes
big impacts.

Instead of using large kind of money just to make a name for
himself the way others did,,,this is the time he should be doing
real campaign,,,,, for 2018.

Instead of wasting time between now and 2018 on useless
projects,,lectures abroad,,let him not repeat the same
mistakes he made the last time he was the PM,,the time he
was supposed to be using that office and show Kenyans that
he was the right person to occupy the state house.

Now he does it again,,,he is fighting for a big name and not
laying ground for a big match,,next time.

You do not need billion,,,but some few millions and creativity
and all of a sudden,,,,every one is singing your name.

Just like JM Kariuki,,,just as,,Mike Sonko,,this youngster who
has become a star for using some few cash and mostly,,his brains.

Mike Sonko does not use Billions but some few cash to impact
people lives.

Go even to remote places like Lokichogio on the border of Kenya, Sudan.

People knows him,,,they talk fondly of him.

One was telling me that,,in Nairobi,,you cannot go hungry because
Sonko has put up stores in every corner of the city,,,of food the
for the poor.

That if you do not have bus fares in Nairobi,,,you just get into
any bus and the money would be collected from Sonko.

So Sonko is very popular in Kenya,,,,because of his good calculations
and interacting with Wanainchi.

Yet,,he is not an,,engineer like Agwambo Raila,,,but a simple guy,, even his
English is very wanting,,just like mine.:A S embarassed:

This is what Raila should be doing,,he must work hard to up the game.

He should stop seeing the world upside down,,,,look at other people
like Sonko and ask himself,,some little questions.

He should engage people like Jammu Afrique and reap big.

Let him invest in real issues,,,like starting a kitty,,,only 10 million kshs for
school bursaries in 47 counties and then let his local friends and in the foreign
lands help increase the kitty and all of a sudden,,people will be singing him real
songs, not those useless songs of Tinga of sijui nini simply because he and
others uprooted Moi from power.

But the biggest problem is that,,you cannot teach an old horse,:eyebrows:
new tricks and that is why i see Raila going down and down.

He is not a match to these new guys on the ground,,the game isn't the same,,Rt
hon, Agwambo,,,mambo ni gigantic these days,,kwa sasa, sir,,,you do not
repeat what akina, Nyerere, John Kufuor,,Jimmy carter, Blair did
somewhere else and expect anything new in Kenya.

The game these days,,is,,two step and CHECKMATE,,,then run to the supreme court,,

Shauri Yako,,baba,,,usi seme Jammu,,,,, hakusema.:biggrin::wave:

Was wondering the same...fursa zooote za 'kuamrisha' artchitect mzuri akupe michoro ya uhakika nayo imegoma? Kwa nini uishie kujema nyumba kama 'St Mary's' bwana...
