When President Kibaki was in power, the hospital in Kayole was named Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, after the First Lady. Later, during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, the Mathare–Korogocho hospital was named Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital, following her Beyond Zero maternal health initiative.
I do not recall seeing the same level of public resistance to those names that I now see whenever the name Raila Odinga Stadium is mentioned.
Raila Odinga was a major figure in Kenya’s political history and public life. People may hold different views about naming public facilities after political figures, and that debate is legitimate.
But why does the discussion become so heated in this particular case? Is the disagreement really about the principle of naming public facilities, or does the identity of the person being honored influence how we react?
Perhaps we should apply the same standard to everyone, regardless of political affiliation.
You cant call the projects shiny things then you want to dictate how those shiny things should be named.
