Transport Minister Dr Harrison Mwakyembe has told the ministry’s staff that he will take severe legal measures, including jailing the Tanzania Ports Authority workers behind acts of sabotages at the Dar es Salaam Port.
He said it is evident that some of the officers have become used to being suspended from work after committing an offence, stressing: “We shall do all we can to ensure staff who are sabotaging the performance of the authority are punished accordingly to make it a lesson for others.”
The minister was addressing the ministry’s Workers Council being held in Tanga yesterday under the chairmanship of Omar Chambo, the Permanent Secretary.
Dr Mwakyembe noted: "There are six countries that border Tanzania that can potentially contribute significantly to the GDP and economic growth of our country. But things have not been working because some people have turned this country into their own property. They are stealing the country’s money making it sink.”
He said because of the sabotage that has been taking place at the port, the government has failed to generate enough revenue per month.
“We have been collecting only 32bn/- per month compared to Mombasa port in Kenya which generates over 200bn/-,” he stressed.
He said the situation was sustained by a network of thieves and a laissez faire attitude among the workers which he had noticed in all institutions which supervise railway transport, aviation and port services.
“I heard from The Guardian sister paper, Nipashe that there is sabotage at the Dar es Salaam Port. I haven’t read the details yet. But when I confirm the reports, I will send such workers to jail because it is better to make a difficult decision to make things work effectively and accordingly,” said Dr Mwakyembe.
He said basically it is not possible to consolidate and improve air travel and other transportation services, if fraud and corruption among the staff of the Ministry continue to undermine the functioning of the Government.
Dr Mwakyembe said it is sad to see the port authority failing to actively manage its facilities and thereby weakening the country’s economy by failing to contribute fully to the GDP.
“I will fear no person whether the rich or what because the money they have is stolen. I will pull them out and send them to jail,” warned the minister.
He however called on the council to strengthen discipline, integrity, loyalty and patriotism at the workplace to ensure the transport sector contributes fully to the national economy.
Dr .Mwakyembe reminded the workers that the ministry was facing a lot of challenges caused by people who are sabotaging it, telling them that time has come for each staff to ensure that he/she performs to standards, failure of which they must voluntarily resign.
