Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Metrological Agency (TMA) has signed a $4.99 million contract (about Sh11.4 billion) with an American firm that will see to the weatherman installing two satellite weather radars in Dodoma and Arusha.
TMA board chairman Buruhani Nyenzi said yesterday that the contract with Enterprise Electronics Corporation (EEC) will bring the total number of satellite weather radars in the country to seven, up from the current five.
“The money will not be entirely spent on purchasing the radars. Part of it will be spent on repairing the five [radars] that currently exist in our network in the next 14 months,” he said.
According to him, the purchased radars have the potential of forecasting from a distance of 450 kilometers.
They also rotate and can thus be able to show results of rain showers within the 250 kilometres radius.
“The equipment will also help in collecting weather data that reflect the reality of our Tanzanian atmosphere,” he added.
TMA executive director Agnes Kijazi thanked the government for setting aside funds to buy the equipment.
She noted that, within five years, TMA has managed to meet its target to have seven radars.
“This is a big achievement,” she said.
Ms Kijazi promised to continue working closely with the government in the endeavor to provide weather forecasts that meeting international standards.
“Climate change has had a major impact around the world and here in the country, we have witnessed changes in climate systems that have an impact on seasonal forecasts and catastrophic weather events. With the availability of modern equipment, our radar network will enable the TMA to provide better services for the development of the nation,” she said.
EEC representative Mr Edwin Kisanga, said part of the funds will be used on training TMA experts.
He said the training of local experts will be conducted in the country by experts from EEC.
So far, TMA has installed three radars in Dar es Salaam, Mwanza na Mtwara. The agency was also finalizing modalities to install more radars in Mbeya and Kigoma.
