Jamani wana JF kuna yeyote alibahatika kuuona mwezi jana??

A stunning smiley face that appeared in the night skies over Perth last night made the first street light displays of the Christmas season extra special.

Just after nightfall, Venus (left), Jupiter (right) and a three-day-old crescent Moon appeared as a big smile above the western horizon.

About that time, dozens of cars descended upon the northern Perth suburb of Connolly to cruise through suburban Prairie Dunes which has become locally famous for its Christmas light displays.

"It was the first night our street's Christmas lights get turned on and the heavens did as well," light-displaying local Rex Haw said today.

"It was a talking point for the people walking up and down the street.

"The skies joined the spirit of the Christmas season by putting on their own light show for the world."

The unusual star/moon combo could easily be seen with the naked eye and was the talk of Perth today.

Did you see it? Send your pics

"It was a very impressive light show," Mr Haw said.

"I have never seen it before."

Mr Haw's next door neighbour Nadia Reece was one of only two Prairie Dunes residents who had not yet put up her Christmas lights.

"We knew that the smiley was going to be out last night and that he would upstage us, so we decided not to bother until later in the week," Ms Reece said.

If you missed the smiley, you'll have to wait another five years before it shines down on Perth again.

It was amazing. Mwangaza ulikuwa mkubwa kuliko ilivyo kawaida. Hapa kwetu jinsi nyota zilivyojipanga ilionekana tofauti. Nimejaribu kui-edit hii picha ionekane jinsi nilivyoona hiyo jana.

Tukio hili litajirudia miaka mitano ijayo. Haijasemwa iwapo itakuwa ni usiku au mchana.

Thanks guys. I was not aware of the event, and so I missed the smiley. Hope I will be on alert next time when it shines down on Perth again.

LazyDog that's the way it exactly looked amaizing really .. never seen something like that before ... All i did was make a dua for me and my family .. siko so much in sciences i believe God had a sign for us... and all i could pray for was the good ones.

Thanks,

Small point of correction, Venus and Jupiter are planets (sayari) just like the earth orbiting the sun, and not stars (nyota)

We only have one star in the solar system, the sun, the rest of the bodies are planets, their moons and a bunch of asteroids plus the occassional comet that drive by every once in a number of years.

The spectacle must have been beautiful I am sure, but nothing to worry about as explained. When you look at the sky you are looking at four dimensional space-time (3d space and one time) projected on two dimensions of space and one of time, giving the apparent appearance that the planets and the moon may collide, this is a mere illusive effect of the said alignment.

After all, you do not panic when you see cars coming to converge from opposite directions of a road, they are in different lanes.

East Africans were last night treated to a rare sight in the skies when two planets Venus and Jupiter courted the crescent moon for several hours, in a rare close grouping of the three brightest planets.

In the phenomenon, which many Kampalans saw with amazement, the crescent moon appeared with the two planets just close to it as brightly shining stars.

The phenomenon happens when Venus, the second closest planet to the sun and seemingly stuck just above the horizon for a couple of months, finally gains altitude in December getting in close quarters with Jupiter, which is headed downward. The big planet will be half as high by December 31, when it has its second close encounter of the month.

"Let's hope this is not one of the signs of the end of the world," a woman said as she gazed in the night sky. The moon is the brightest, smallest and closest to the earth of the three and is 252,000 miles away. Venus, the second brightest, closest to the sun is 94 million miles away from earth, while Jupiter, the biggest of the three is 540 million miles away.

The three celestial objects come together from time to time, but often they are too close to the sun or unite at a time when they aren't so visible.

The next time the three will be as close and visible as this week will be November 18, 2052, according to Jack Horkheimer, director of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium.

However, two out of the three, Venus and the crescent moon only, will happen again on New Year's Eve.

What is the percentage of what we see at night are bodies residing outside the boundary of our solar system?

There are 2 planet-planet occultations in the 19th century (1801-1900); none in the 20th century (1901-2000); and 5 in the 21st century (2001-2100). They are as follows:*

1808 December 9: Mercury occults Saturn
1818 January 3: Venus occults Jupiter
2065 November 22: Venus occults Jupiter
2067 July 15: Mercury occults Neptune
2079 August 11: Mercury occults Mars
2088 October 27: Mercury occults Jupiter
2094 April 7: Mercury occults Jupiter
