Hivi majuzi wamejengewa international airport mpya na ni among the fastest growing in East Africa, Do you know Eldoret? ama Kericho mji ambao ndio center ya kilimo na chai inatoka huko. Mji wa Thika ndio industrial capital na kuna viwanda vya hali ya juu! Usisahau sekta ya utalii mwaka jana grew by 32% and brought in 98billion Kenyan Shillings na kila parks ziko pande zote Kenya. Mbona ukweli hampendi?
 
Asante sana mkuu kwa kuleta hizi takwimu maana kuna mtu kaleta thread hapa mwanzoni wa juma juu ya maduka ya nguo ya Woolworth kufunga biashara zao hapa Tanzania. Habari hiyo nakumbuka ilitoka kwenye gazeti la The Eastafrican.

Katika makala hiyo walijitahidi kueleza na kutoa takwimu kama hizi na hapa ndio nimepata ushahidi kuwa kwa hali hii ina maana kuwekeza Tanzania ni kutafuta kupata hasara tu. 82.4% ya watu wasiokuwa hata na uhakika wa kula mlo mmoja kwa hakika hawawezi kusupport biashara yoyote, wenyewe maisha yao ni katika kiwango cha 'substance living'.

Kwa bahati mbaya kabisa hizi takwimu zinaonyesha umasikini huu wote kwenye nchi ambayo ndiyo yenye rasilimali nyingi kuliko zote. Na rasilimali ya msingi kupita zote ni WATU, pia ina AMANI! ...Tanzania ina idadi kubwa ya watu zaidi ya hizi nchi zote. Hapo sitaongelea rasilimali zingine maana hizo zimepigiwa kelele nyingi sana mpaka mtoto wangu mdogo wa miaka miwili anazijua!

Naamini tunao Watanzania wenye uwezo wa kuongoza nchii hii na kuongeza hii 12.1% ya middle class na kufikia angalau 30%, tuache kungangania watu wanaoleta umasikini badala ya usitawi wa jamii yetu.
 
hardworking economies, i like the report coz it sure reflects what's happening on the ground. Boss, could you kindly post a link/report on the telephony segment as a follow up.

Anasema propotion ya watu wanaoishi chini ya $1.25 kwa siku (Proportion of people living under $1.25 per day), yaani wale watu ambao hawana hata uhakika wa mlo mmoja: Kenya ni asilimia 19.72% na Tanzania ni 82.4%.

Je hapo umesoma na kuelewa hizo takwimu? Kumbuka pia Middle class (hawa ni watu wenye uhakika wa maisha kumbuka) ni karibu 50% kwa Kenya na 12.1% kwa Tanzania! Na hapo hujaongelea High class society ambayo kwa Kenya inaonekana ni kama 36% na TZ ni kama 5% ya watu wote.

Angalia vizuri na uelewe wanachomaanisha mkuu, ila nakubaliana na mkuu The Boss anayesema kuwa TZ hakuna accurate data lakini justification ya madai yake sidhani kama is all that strong, had it been so, Woolworth wouldn't have come up with that idea of closing business in TZ. Ni maoni yangu

Umaskini wetu ni mtaji kwao. Maskini hawezi kuhoji kulikoni. Ndio maana wamekazana kutujengea shule za kata wakati watoto wao wanapelekwa Ulaya au Feza.
 
Wakenya wamechanganyikiwa na kuwadanganya ADB(unajua tena ma-researchers wa Ki-Afrika kwa kulipua mambo), lakini hapa Jamiiforums watu hatudanganyiki.

Nadhani Kenya mtu akiwa karani, manamba wa kuchuma majani ya chai au kwa kurahisisha mtu akiwa anapata mshahara kwa kuajiriwa anajiita 'middle class' wakati watu wa mataifa mengine kama Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda na Rwanda wanaufahamu mkubwa juu ya nani ni 'middle- class' ktk jamii zao.

Mfano mzuri tuchukuwe nchini Uingereza ambapo pia watu hawaelewi dhana ya ' middle -class' ni nini:

Umeulizwa kama unaijua Kenya weye au unasikia redioni na TV tu!
Hizo takwimu zinahusu sana na zinaelezea mengi katka uchumi.
Tanzania tuna hali ngumu sana kimaisha.
Jiulize kwanini hakuna franchise inadumu Tanzania. Kuanzia akina Chick-king, Steers, na sasa haya maduka ya Truworth, 4u2 etc. Yote yanategemea middle class.Ukiangalia Kenya, kila kukicha ni ma malls ya kufa mtu yanajengwa. Kuanzia yale ya zamani kama Sarit Centre, Ya ya Centre, Village Market hadi sasa kubwa lao Wesgate.Hapo hujazungumzia ma supermarket makubwa kama Uchumi, Nakumatt etc.Tanzania kuna vidukawalla vya wahindi na wapemba na wachagga,wasafwa etc, supermarket zinaanzishwa na kufa kila siku. Mnakumbuka Shoprite along Nyerere Rd? Ya Mayfair ishajifia siku nyingi. Kwa kifupi middle class ndio roho ya kukua na ku survive haya ma franchise na maduka makubwa.Maskini anapitapita kufaidi aircondition humo ndani na kushangashangaa tu.

WHO IS THE MIDDLE CLASS - American perspective

Overview
America is sometimes called a "middle-class country," but nobody - not economists, sociologists, or the U.S. Census Bureau - seems to have a clear definition of who the middle class actually is.

The notion of where a dividing line between "middle class" and "working class" might be is an elusive one.

In November 2003, Chris Baker of THE WASHINGTON TIMES reported in "What is middle class?" that the Census Bureau shows the middle 20% of the country earning between $40,000 and $95,000 annually. The Drum Major Institute for Public Policy, a non-partisan and non-profit organization, reports that the middle class has conventionally come to mean families with incomes between $25,000 and $100,000 each year.

But if you ask the American people, you'll get yet another response. According to statistics from the National Opinion Research Center, as reported by Baker, large numbers of American define themselves as "working class" or "middle class," including:
  • 50% of those families who earn between $20,000 and $40,000 annually
  • 38% of those families who earn between $40,000 and $60,000 annually
  • 16.8% of those families who earn over $110,000 annually
As NOW reported in "Middle Class Squeeze" (December 13, 2002), the shape of income distribution in America is changing and many are finding it increasingly difficult to afford housing while keeping up with necessities such as food, clothing, transportation, and health care.

In Baker's article, Anirban Basu, chairman and CEO of Optimal Solutions Group, explains, "Based on those [income data] numbers, the statistical middle class can't afford the middle-class lifestyle. I think that's why there is so much confusion about what it is and why so many people have trouble identifying themselves as anything but middle class."

With the 2004 campaign year underway, the Drum Major Institute has surveyed the major Democratic candidates to find out where they stand on protecting the middle class and restoring mobility to poor and working families who want to earn their way into the middle class.

Read the candidates' records and proposals on such issues as minimum wage, bankruptcy abuse protection, federal regulation of credit card and lending industries, health insurance, unemployment insurance and more in "The Myth of the Middle? Campaign 2004 on America's Middle Class."

Pole lakini sidhani umeelewa the facts! You are not considered part of the middle class if you make $2-$20 but it is if you spend that amount per day. $2 will get you much more in Tanzania than it can in the US. That is why there is a weighted C.P.I (consumer price index) with the base being the cost of living in New York and you will see that life in a city like nairobi is almost 90% times cheaper that life in NY. The said middle class is also stratified from the lower end to the upper end and the formular is accepted by all major economists in the world. This data was also produced in conjunction with the governments of all the countries that are listed.
Here we have a challenge to better ourselves because believe it or not, the data was much worse 5 years ago. We have a long way to go and should be aware of the reality and grow our countries.

the middle class is defined as individuals or
households that fall between the 20th and
80th percentile of the consumption
distribution or between 0.75 and 1.25 times
median per capita income, respectively

class is usually defined as individuals with
annual income exceeding $3,900 in
purchasing power parity (PPP) terms

daily per capita expenditure between $2 to $4
and those with daily per capita expenditures

2.2 The middle class is widely
acknowledged to be Africa's future, the group
that is crucial to the continent's economic and
political development. But it is difficult to define
exactly who falls into this key group and even
harder still to establish how many middle class
people there are in Africa. Recent estimates
put the size of the middle class in the region in
the neighborhood of 300 to 500 million
people, representing the population that is
between Africa's vast poor and the continent's
few elite. Africa's emerging middle class
comprises roughly the size of the middle class
in India or China.

We can choose to call them whatever we want but that does not take aware from the fact that 19.72% of Kenyans live on less than $1.25 per day and these people make up the most impoverished segment of our society without the access to most basic amenities the figure is worse in the rest of the other East African countries.

On the other hand, the upward mobility has realized the upswing in the numbers living on over $1.25 a day. These are the FACTS we can argue semantics but can not deny the FACTS! There are many that will seek to discredit the reports but the sooner we accept the reality the better and we can learn from this and make our countries much better.
 

The Americans nor the British can tell you for sure who are the middle class, the stats/data dont tell the whole story. We know for sure Kenyans too are confused but the biggest 'mabanda' estates (Lunga Lunga/ Mathare Valley) in Africa are in Nairobi, Kenya.
