LONDON (Alliance News) - Shares in London and Johannesburg-listed Kibo Energy PLC got a charge on Wednesday after Kibo confirmed that a tender offer with the Tanzania state electricity firm was still proceeding despite the recent cancellation of other tenders.
Shares in Kibo were 16% higher at 2.37 pence in London on Wednesday, untraded at ZAR0.36 in Johannesburg.
Last Friday, Kibo noted the Tanzania Electricity Supply Co - or Tanesco - had cancelled with immediate effect a tender for large solar power generating projects, coal-fired power generating projects, and large wind power generating projects.
Kibo emphasised at the time, however, that it had ascertained that the tender for coal power projects of a capacity between 150 megawatts to 300 megawatts in one location was "definitely still going ahead" and was unaffected by the announcement.
On Wednesday, Kibo confirmed receiving notice from Tanesco inviting tender offers in this regard adding that "prospective developers who have earlier expressed their interests to develop coal power projects" were "advised to participate in this tendering process."
"We are pleased that the tender process is continuing and that it resumed so quick after the cancellation notice," Kibo Chief Executive Officer Louis Coetzee said.
Kibo is planning for its flagship Mbeya coal-to-power project in Tanzania to submit under this tender.
Coetzee added the firm will "collect" the amended documents in order to "ensure" the tender qualification document it submitted in October "complies with any new requirements" in the new tender.
"We are however of the opinion that our submission will still be compliant and if any amendments will be required that these will be of a very minor nature," Coetzee added. "We are looking forward to a prompt conclusion of the entire tender process."

StockMarketWire.com - Kibo Energy welcomed the Tanzanian government's move to re-open a tender process for coal-fired power plants in the African nation, for which it had submitted a bid.

The government had cancelled the process five days ago to make procedural amendments.

'We are pleased that the tender process is continuing and that it resumed so quick after the cancellation notice,' chief executive Louis Coetzee said.

'We will collect the amended RFQ documents forthwith to ensure that the tender qualification document which we submitted on 18 October 2019 complies with any new requirements that might be stipulated in the latest RFQ.'

'We are however of the opinion that our submission will still be compliant and if any amendments will be required that these will be of a very minor nature.'

ABO Wind and RP Global have formed a joint venture to develop between three and five wind farms in Tanzania totalling 400MW in the next few years.

The JV, Upepo Tanzania, has already started selecting suitable project sites and collecting data via a wind measurement mast.

Pre-development is underway with the goal to bring the first wind farm to construction by 2020, Upepo said.

ABO Tanzania director Edward Koenen said: “Tanzania is a very promising new market for our company, offering excellent conditions for wind and solar development. We are looking forward to advancing a sustainable energy supply in Tanzania together with our partner RP Global.”

RP Global Africa director Leo Schiefermuller said: “Tanzania provides very good wind resources and together with our partner ABO Wind, and in close cooperation with the local communities, we are targeting the development of a larger pipeline, which shall be implemented during the next five years.

“Those projects will not only increase the renewable energy share in Tanzania, but most importantly will also reduce the cost of electricity generation in the country”.
