English learning thread

Hello Mama Wawili, how are you? It has been a while since I posted something here. Happy belated new year 2013. Better late than never 🙂)

Hello my dear friends.
I need your help, when I was reading a certain novel I come across with few sentences with 'had had',or 'has had',e.g I had had lunch,or I have had lunch.I am confused! where and when to use had had or have had in a sentence?

I find it hard to talk about the use of "has had" alone isolating "have had", both are used in expressing the Present Perfect Tense. "Have had" is used in all persons except in third person singular like in the example you provided I have had lunch while "has had" is used in third person singular example He has had lunch.

On the other hand the tense form in "had had" is past perfect. It is used to express an activity that happened before another activity in the past, example I had had lunch at 1 before going to work . "Had had" is also used to indicate possession.

Other contributors may offer us more insight in the topic.

Hiyo red haijakaa vizuri, vipi ingekuwa "With your help,I will be able to speak English fluently".
Think about using with and not from. Can not go to details due to time restrictions.

Dah! English is a problem for sure!

Better you correct him/her rather than only pointingout the mistakes

once you dream in english language I will salute you, keep it up

in some cases it wouldnt be bad if you could find time to search for some you tube posts on english, go to google search for english learners beginers, inter-mediate, advanced learners it will help a great deal

pmwasyoke, don't use a noun and a pronoun together in a single sentence.

For example,Instead of saying; " I am myself not that good..."

Use, " I am also not that good ..." or any of its variants i.e. Personally et al et al

Mama wawilii bibie umefika, wala usimsikilize mtu yoyote anaekufanyia "ntima-nyongo".

Your command of the English language is impeccable. Your English construct in the above statement is more than what many college-level native speakers can achieve - (trust me, I have been teaching at college-level huku ughaibuni kwa miaka mingi sana). You are there baby. Keep on reading those books. That is the only sure way to build up your vocabulary and perfect the usage of those new words.

Posting yako ya tangu mwaka jana ndio nimeiona leo. I wish I was there from the beginning. Ningejifaragua kuwa - "mnaona, mwanafunzi wangu yule". Lakini nafurahi na kuwapongeza wana JF wote waliokusaidia - GOOD JOB GALS & GUYS!!

Cheers.

Thank you very much for your adviceTunduruboy ,I have been using the method you have proposed and Im observing incredible results, atleast I can write a paragraph like this ha ha ha ha ha.Though sometimes I need to meet with people face to face so that I can test my English, improve my vocabulary and be confident infront of people.I stand to be corrected.
Cheers

Hello Kajaji, we are on the same boat, what are we supposed to do is to work hard on the matter without getting tired or give up, there is no one to make us best than ourselves. People will just give us direction it's upon us whether to change or not. Just be positive and open minded, be ready and tune yourself to face the challenges ahead. Review the previous comments (if not yet) on this thread you will get a starting point. Can't wait to see us writing/commenting/posting in English without grammatical error .Together we can. All the best

even my self i need it to improve my english languAGE
