Ethnic differences between students from Maasai and Kipsigis communities at Siwot Secondary School in Bomet is to blame for the Monday night fire, parents have said.
Although the school management was noncommittal, some parents said persistent infighting among the students may have prompted some of them to burn the boys' dorm.
Kenneth Koech, a community leader and a parent at the school, said the administration was trying to conceal the fact that students had threatened unrest.
“The bad-blood between students from different communities had been reported and degenerated into animosity...the management was aware, but we wonder why it failed to take action, he said. Bomet police boss Samson Rukunga said officers had been deployed to the school three days ago to avert unrest.
