The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has criticised the government's continued exportation of electricity to neighbouring countries, arguing that many Ugandans still lack access to reliable and affordable power despite the country's growing electricity generation capacity.
Speaking during the party's weekly press conference at its headquarters in Najjanankumbi, FDC Vice Chairperson Robert Centenary questioned the government's priorities, saying it was premature to celebrate electricity exports when millions of citizens remain underserved.
Centenary argued that while Uganda has invested heavily in power generation and regional energy trade, the benefits have not adequately reached many households, businesses and rural communities that continue to struggle with access to electricity and high power costs.
He called on the government to focus on expanding domestic connectivity and ensuring that electricity becomes more accessible and affordable to ordinary Ugandans before prioritising exports to neighbouring states.
