Alonso 3rd, Hamilton 4th

Vettel, Vergne, Perez, Grosjean out

Hamilton & Massa suffer punctures

Nico Rosberg stands atop the podium and laps up the applause as he celebrates his second win of the season. Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso stand either side of him. Great drives from all three.

An exhausted Nico Rosberg climbs out of his car, removes his helmet and wipes the sweat from his forehead. "That was crazy stuff," he says.

Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton who finished fourth: "Great job guys this weekend, just a shame about the tyre."

FINAL STANDINGS

David Coulthard - BBC F1 co-commentator
"'If only' is the story of Mark's career, it's a great comeback for Webber though under the circumstances. All things considered that was a great result."

NICO ROSBERG WINS THE BRITISH GRAND PRIX!

Lewis Hamilton chases Fernando Alonso for third but it looks like he will run out of laps. Meanwhile Nico Rosberg heads into the final turn with Mark Webber breathing down his neck...

Lewis Hamilton flies past Kimi Raikkonen into fourth having done the fastest final sector. Great driving from the Brit. Nico Rosberg and Mark Webber still battling at the front. One last push now from Webber...

Fernando Alonso has just too much grip for Kimi Raikkonen and the Finn relinquishes third for the Spaniard. How much are Lotus going to rue not taking Raikkonen into the pits when others did?

Mark Webber switches his attention to Nico Rosberg - 1.3s separates the two. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso, on fresh tyres, is closing in on third-place Kimi Raikkonen. This is going to be close.

Nico Rosberg leads but it is the battle between second and third that has hearts in the mouths of all those watching. Mark Webber and Kimi Raikkonen scrapping side by side before Webber ekes out the pace he needs to edge past at Copse and into second.

Wonderful, sweeping pass by Fernando Alonso on Jenson Button on the approach to Copse and the Spaniard is up to sixth. Another tyre failure for Sergio Perez - his second of the weekend - and he pits from 18th and it appears his race is effectively over.

Safety car heads back in at the end of lap 45 and we are racing again with seven laps remaining.

Nico Rosberg returned to the circuit ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and behind the safety car. No pit stop for Raikkonen, a call questioned by the Finn. "Did we make the right choice not to pit?" he asks over team radio.

Nico Rosberg's race engineer over team radio: "Nico, we can see delamination in the middle of the tread."

Felipe Massa, Paul Di Resta and Romain Grosjean all head into the pit lane. Mediums for Massa and Grosjean, hards for Di Resta.

Immediately after passing Sebastian Vettel into first, Mercedes call for Nico Rosberg to pit for fresh tyres. As it stands, Rosberg leads from Mark Webber and Kimi Raikkonen.

SAFETY CAR
The twists and turns of this race continue as Sebastian Vettel, the championship leader of course, is flying along quite contently at the front and seemingly on his way to victory.

However, the Red Bull suddenly loses pace and his rivals all whizz past as Vettel trundles towards the side of the circuit, reporting gearbox failure. It is his first retirement of the season.

MECHANICAL
SEBASTIAN VETTEL SUFFERS GEARBOX FAILURE AND IS OUT OF THE RACE

LAP 39
Jean-Eric Verge is out of the race after pulling into the pits on lap 37 and failed to re-emerge. First retirement of the day. Fernando Alonso has worked his way up from ninth to fifth but is struggling at the moment to gain any further ground. He trails fourth-place Mark Webber by two seconds.

Andrew Benson - Chief F1 writer at Silverstone
"Pirelli has introduced a new bonding process for this race, which they hoped would solve the problems they were having with delaminations earlier in the season. These failures are different - the tyres are collapsing rather than staying intact with the tread tearing off. This will almost certainly revive the debate about whether Pirelli can introduce a new construction that has so far been blocked by Ferrari, Lotus and Force India."

LAP 38
Not much change at the front of the pack as Sebastian Vettel leads Nico Rosberg by 2.2s. Very little separating Kimi Raikkonen and Mark Webber, third and fourth respectively, as they fight for a podium position.

LAP 37
The battle of the Brits continues as Lewis Hamilton and Paul Di Resta tussle for 12th. Blink and you'll miss it as they slug it out heading into Copse corner. Di Resta holds his position as Hamilton almost rear-ends him. The Force India successfully holds - it's fantastic racing for the fans.

LAP 35
Nico Rosberg pits from second, takes on hards, and rejoins in the same position before Sebastian Vettel likewise heads in for more hards.

LAP 34
Adrian Sutil, Sergio Perez and Paul Di Resta head into the pit lane as Sebastian Vettel continues to lead. Kimi Raikkonen up to third. All 22 cars still on the track, despite the tyre-related incidents earlier.

LAP 33
Lewis Hamilton's tyres have evidently suffered from the Mercedes' efforts to get past Paul Di Resta as first Kimi Raikkonen sweeps past, quickly followed Fernando Alonso and then Mark Webber. Pit stop surely on the cards for Hamilton soon.

Mercedes: (external) Great fight. Come on Lewis Hamilton!!

LAP 31
Fernando Alonso dodges debris on the tack at the approach to Stowe, seemingly coming from a Sauber. Lewis Hamilton tries to make his move on Paul Di Resta coming down towards the start-finish line, has to back off, but tries again at the first corner, again unable to find a way past his fellow Brit.

LAP 30
Mark Webber briefly wrestles seventh from Romain Grosjean but the Lotus's response is swift and Grosjean reclaims his place. Kimi Raikkonen pits, puts on more hards and is back out.

RACE UPDATE
Vettel leads Rosberg by 2.1 secs. Major fears over state of the tyres following failures of the left-rears for three cars, including Hamilton, who is down to 13th after starting on pole. Safety car has come out for the track to be cleaned. 1 Vettel 2 Rosberg 3 Sutil 4 Alonso 5 Raikkonen 6 Ricciardo 7 Grosjean 8 Webber 9 Perez 10 Button

LEW IN TYRES SAFETY FURY
By GRAEME BRYCE

LEWIS HAMILTON has accused F1 bosses of risking drivers’ lives.

Stars are threatening to boycott Sunday’s German Grand Prix after Hamilton fell victim to one of FIVE horrific tyre explosions at yesterday’s British GP at Silverstone.

And British ace Hamilton said: “It’s unacceptable.

“Someone could have crashed and it’s not until someone gets hurt that anyone’s going to do something about it.

“It’s a waste of time talking to any of them at the moment if I’m honest.

“They can see what happened today.

“If they don’t react on it, that says everything.

“To have that many rear-left blow-outs is just unacceptable. Safety is the biggest issue.”

Four years ago, Ferrari’s Felipe Massa was nearly killed when he was struck by a suspension spring from another car.

Unforeseen Now the Brazilian, who suffered his own blow-out yesterday, is threatening a Nurburgring boycott if safety is not stepped up.

He said: “We are going to discuss it. I am 100 per cent sure that every driver is complaining.”

Hamilton’s Mercedes team were punished last month by an international tribunal for breaking strict testing rules, even though they insisted they were trying to help Pirelli improve safety.

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery was unwilling to offer any early explanation yesterday for the cause of the failures.

He said: “It was something unforeseen.

“We’ve seen something new, a different type of problem.”

FIA president Jean Todt has told Pirelli to attend an emergency meeting in Paris on Wednesday to address driver safety.
