Ferrari out to beat Michael Schumacher and Mercedes

_47101076_schu_getty_466x282.jpg

Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali says Michael Schumacher's return to Formula 1 has fired up the Italian outfit and new recruit Fernando Alonso.

Schumacher, who won five world titles with Ferrari, is returning in 2010 with Mercedes, who won both titles in 2009 under their former guise, Brawn.

But Domencali insists Ferrari have him in their sights, saying: "Michael's return is inner motivation to our team.

"Fernando is the only driver to defeat Michael and he wants to win."

Schumacher's renewed rivalry with Alonso, who beat him to the 2005 and 2006 championships when driving for Renault, is one of the most anticipated match-ups of the new season, alongside 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton's first competitive meeting with Schumacher.

Relationships between the seven-time world champion and Alonso soured during their championship battle in 2006.

One flashpoint was when Schumacher deliberately crashed his car at slow speed to stop the Spaniard snatching pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Schumacher has never admitted to deliberately blocking the track but he was found guilty by race stewards and put to the back of the grid.

It was Alonso's turn to be furious at the Italian Grand Prix later that year when he was demoted five places for allegedly holding up Schumacher's team-mate Felipe Massa in qualifying.

Alonso has now arrived at Ferrari as Massa's team-mate for 2010 and he donned the famous red kit for the first time this week at the team's annual winter sport's event at Italian ski resort Madonna di Campiglio.

Domenicali is relishing the battles ahead between his new Ferrari line-up and former employee Schumacher.

"Michael's return is further stimulus within our set-up," Domenicali added. "It has also triggered new interest and that is good for racing.

"We have two Latin drivers and it's a gush of fresh air which brings a sparkling, new environment. This will stimulate team work and has a positive impact on the group."

How Formula 1 race strategy will be different in 2010

_47117358_carsracing466.jpg

Bernie Ecclestone's latest controversial comments about introducing shortcuts to Formula 1 to improve overtaking has focused attention on the latest rule changes to be introduced into the sport.

Ecclestone's idea, dismissed by former Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine on 5 Live on Thursday evening as "horrible", is the latest in a series of proposals by him rooted in his belief that the decision to ban refuelling in 2010 will have a detrimental effect on the racing.

But that will not necessarily be the case - grands prix will look different but strategy, and the use of it, will still play a crucial role.

With just two weeks before winter testing starts in Spain on 1 February, and teams hurriedly putting the finishing touches to their new cars, we take a look at the key factors that will shape the races this season.

FUEL CONSUMPTION

The first big headache for teams will be calculating the exact amount of fuel to put in the car.

Engineers will have had enough time in winter testing to figure out their fuel consumption rates under different weather/track conditions and engine settings, and can use a lot of their data from last year so this shouldn't be a problem.

Where the headache starts is trying to carry as little fuel as possible to complete the race.

Three-second pit stops are the target - some teams think they can do it quicker even than that
Dominic Harlow, chief engineer at Force India, says: "We'll be working hard on saving fuel during the race.

"Even 1% too much fuel could end up costing you a position so it will be critical to carry exactly the right amount. If you finish a race with 5kg excess fuel in the tank, it will have cost you 10 seconds during the race."

So with very tight safety margins and even the temptation to under-fuel their cars in order to be quicker, potentially the biggest embarrassment for the teams will be running out of petrol.

There will be moments when drivers need to conserve fuel to make sure they finish the race - they'll have to slow down as much as they dare, while trying to keep others behind.

Engine mixture settings will be critical: Drivers will be leaning out their fuel mix when they can, for instance stuck in traffic or behind a safety car. This will allow them to enrich it when needed for more speed.

In this regard, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello may be at an advantage, being the only two drivers in the field who drove in the last non-refuelling season, 1993.

Bahrain's track revamped for Formula 1 season opener

Bahrain's Grand Prix circuit has been revamped ahead of the opening race of the 2010 Formula 1 season next month.

The track, which stretches into the Sakhir desert, has been lengthened from 5.4 km (3.4 miles) to 6.3 km and features a new loop of corners.

Organisers said the changes would offer a new experience to drivers.

"It is the perfect time to evolve the circuit with this new challenge and new overtaking opportunities," said Zayed Alzayani, chairman of the circuit.

The Bahrain Grand Prix, which hosts the 14 March season opener, was added to the F1 calendar in 2004. Jenson Button won last year's race on his way to a maiden world title.

Bahrain officials are keen to keep pace with newer circuits in the region like the Yas Marina track in Abu Dhabi, which was used for the first time last year.

"The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) was built to set new standards for international motor sport and Formula One is the pinnacle," stated Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, acting chief executive of the BIC.

"As the sport evolves and grows it is entirely fitting that we use our unique geography and circuit design to grow with it and deliver the best racing and entertainment that we can."

Well, well F1 is on us again,as man pits is wits over speed-so far due to changes in rules we F1 fans have been left in limbo. Will mercedes and Brawn really be able to give schumacher a competitive car? will Massa put Alonso where he belongs, resulting in Alonso throwing his toys out of the pram? will Hamilton completly overshadow Button as bookmakers want us to believe? All in all,F1 this year will in all probability go down as the greatest duel ever.We cannot wait for sunday

THE first two or three races will most probably be lucky dip, then the big guns will get their act together-STARTEGY wise, this years championship will need brains to work overtime-it could come down to which driver can conserve tyres as there is no refuelling petrol. History has shown that when it comes to conserving tyres Schumi and Button have no peer but even though anything can happen
