"SEATTLE — Tanzania is one of the least-developed countries in the world, and though the poverty rate is slowly decreasing, a significant amount of its citizens remain impoverished. In 2012, 12 million Tanzanians lived in poverty, about 70 percent of the population. One out of seven of those living in poverty lived in extreme poverty, surviving on the equivalent of less than $1.25 a day.

About 34 percent of Tanzanians live below the basic needs poverty line, meaning they lack the minimum resources that people need to be physically healthy. There have been small improvements since 2012, but poverty is still an obvious issue. So what are the causes of poverty in Tanzania?

Many of the causes are unfortunately all too familiar in discussions of poverty around the world. Poor access to and knowledge about healthcare, insufficient nutrition due to food insecurity, and a lack of education all play a role in Tanzania’s poverty. However, other factors cause poverty in Tanzania as well, including problems with agriculture and a high rural population."
