I dont know about you guys , lakini huku niliko stima hazijapotea tangu Feb! Najua kuna scandle inaendelea kuhusu KPLC lakini najua kuna jamaa wanafanya kazi yao, ninapoishi waliunganisha transmission line za kutoka stetion mbili tofauti, Dam moja ikipoteza stima, stetion nyengine bado inasambaza umeme bila kukata stima....


Anyway, kuna project ya kupitisha nyaya za stima chini ya ardhi Nairobi nzima na kuondoa mahitaji ya mlingoti ... Sasa kumeongezwa high capacity GIS ambayo ni substation ya kwanza Kenya na ukanda huu ya E&C Africa ambayo ina uwezo wa kuchukua stima yote kutoka mtambo mmoja wa olkaria geothermal station ... Inasemekana GIS haihitaji repair nyingi na inaweza kujiendesha yenyewe kwa mda mrefu bila kuhitaji marekebisho...

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 30 – President Uhuru Kenyatta today commissioned an ultra-modern 220 Kv gas insulated substation to improve the power supply in Nairobi.
The substation, the first of its kind in East and Central Africa, will handle the power coming from the Olkaria Geothermal Power Station and will create an alternative power chain for the city.
“The Sh13 billion project, will greatly improve the quality of power in Nairobi’s City Centre, serving the Industrial area, Mombasa road, Upperhill, the entire Central Business District (CBD), Lower hill and Kilimani area,” said President Kenyatta when he spoke at the event at GIS station on Bunyala Road. “It therefore creates additional contingency in electricity supply thus enhancing the reliability of power in this area,” added the President.
Gas Insulated Substations are high voltage substations in which the major structures are contained in a sealed environment. It is reliable, requires little maintenance and is compact thus requiring little space.
President Kenyatta said the improvement of power supply in the city is aimed at creating a conducive environment for business and industry so that they can, in turn, create more jobs for Kenyans.
“This initiative feeds into one of the key pillars of the Big Four Agenda, Enhancing Manufacturing, to create quality jobs for Kenyans,” said the President
He added that the Government will remain steadfast in supporting the concept of Build Kenya Buy Kenya, to guarantee increased job creation and growth of local industries.
He said the Government is committed to greatly increase the transmission and distribution network for power.
Since 2013, over 1400Km of transmission lines have been completed, with another 2300Km in progress. Furthermore, a total of 33,900 km of distribution lines and 69 new substations have been completed over the past five years.
“This has seen industries enjoy more stable power and households experiencing reduced power outages,” said the President.
President Kenyatta, who was accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto and Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, said the expanded national access to electricity has been achieved through various connectivity initiatives such as the Last Mile Connectivity Project, the electrification of public facilities and the Global Partnership on Output Based Aid (GPOBA) programme targeting people living in informal settlements.
“These programmes are a major pillar in our plan to sustain the rapid pace of electricity connections in the quest to achieve universal access to electricity by the year 2022,” said the President.
He said the Government will take measures to control vandalism, a major problem for Kenya’s infrastructure development.
CS Keter had informed the President that vandalism is one of the big reasons costs of infrastructure development expands after initial plans.
President Kenyatta’s Government has also invested heavily in power generation.
The proportion of geothermal capacity increased to 28.43% from 14.8% in 2013, significantly reducing dependence on generation from expensive diesel power plants.
The total number of customers connected stands at 6.7 million translating to a national electricity access of 74% against 27pc in 2013.
President Kenyatta challenged Kenya Power to strive to become the biggest corporation in Kenya since it has the potential for that achievement.

GIS was first developed in various countries between 1968 and 1972 . After about 5 years of experience, the use rate increased to about 20 % of new substations in countries where space is limited . In other countries with space easily available , the higher cost of GIS relative to AIS has limited use to special cases .
Sulfur hexaflouride is an inert , nontoxic , colorless, odorless , tasteless , and nonflammable gas consisting of a sulfur atom surrounded by and tightly bonded to six flourine atoms. It is about five times as dense as air. SF 6 is used in GIS at pressures from 400 to 600 kPa absolute . The pressure is chosen so that the SF 6 will not condense into a liquid at the lowest temperatures the equipment experiences.
SF 6 has two to three times the insulating ability of air at the same pressure. SF 6 is about 100 times better than air for interrupting arcs . It is the universally used interrupting medium for high voltage circuit breakers , replacing the older mediums of oil and air. SF 6 decomposes in the high temperature of an electric arc, but the decomposed gas recombines back into SF 6 so well that it is not necessary to replenish the SF 6 in GIS .
There are some reactive decomposition byproducts formed because of the trace presence of moisture , air , and other contaminants. The quantities formed are very small . Molecular sieve absorbants inside the GIS enclosure eliminate these reactive byproducts.
SF 6 is supplied in 50 - kg gas cylinders in a liquid state at a pressure of about 6000 kPa for convenient storage and transport. Gas handling systems with filters, compressors , and vacuum pumps are commercially available . Best practices and the personnel safety aspects of SF 6 gas handling are covered in international standards (IEC , 1995) .

May 2017 – CONCO is due to complete a major turnkey project undertaken for Tanzanian electricity supply authority TANESCO, by May 2017, whereby it has been constructing and rehabilitating several substations in the Kilimanjaro and Arusha areas of the country. The main objective of the project is to improve the quality and reliability of the power supply of TANESCO’s 33/11 kV distribution system and to capture the unmet power demands in the main supply centres of Arusha and Kilimanjaro.

This World Bank funded Tanzania Energy Development and Access Project (TEDAP) required that CONCO adhere to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards. Equipment was imported from manufacturers in Spain, India, Germany, France, Italy and South Africa to meet the high standards. “It has logistically been a challenge to manage and co-ordinate a project of this nature,” said CONCO Project Engineer, Eugene Marais, “particularly with all substations being constructed in parallel and in most cases within the existing live substations. The substations were designed from the ground up and varying soil conditions and altitude meant that each substation was not merely a replication of each other; each site layout was different. For example, in the case of the substations near Kilimanjaro, seismic activity had to be taken into account particularly due to the earthquake that occurred in the past, which was as recent as 2016, just 80 to 100 kilometres from our nearest site.”

Other factors such as cable size needed careful consideration to ensure the correct current carrying capacity due to current and future electricity demand. The majority are indoor substations housing 33kV Gas Insulted Switchgear (GIS) and 11kV Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS), with the exception of the outdoor transformers.

During the new construction works and dismantling of the old equipment, temporary measures were in place to ensure power supply outages were kept to a minimum, such as temporary cable connections between incoming lines and power transformers, and step-by-step changeover from old to new transformers, to name a few. Where substations were rehabilitated, it was also necessary for CONCO to determine the usefulness of existing equipment and transport it to TANESCO’s storage facility.

“A project of this complexity would not have been possible without the assistance and guidance of the consulting firm, Fichtner, as well as our team headed up by our country manager Mr Derek Phillips, based at our Tanzania office in Dar-es-Salaam. We are indebted to TANESCO for entrusting this very important project to CONCO,” concluded Marais.
